Delhi-NCR residents get respite from heat, IMD forecasts similar weather for few days
New Delhi, June 16
A brief spell of light rains in the Delhi-NCR region on Tuesday brought welcome respite for the residents from the gruelling heatwave, even as the latter cheered the sudden 'cooling' of the weather.
According to the Meteorological department, the maximum temperature dipped by almost 9 degrees Celsius after the rains, allowing the residents to feel calmer and cooler.
After the rains, the maximum temperature fell to 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was recorded at 27 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
According to the IMD forecast, similar weather activity is likely to persist in the national capital region for the next few days with rainfall, thunderstorm activity and strong winds knocking at the doors of Delhi-NCR intermittently.
The weather department, making forecasts for the coming days, said that the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum around 27-28 degrees Celsius. Humidity is expected to range between 65 and 40 percent. The temperature may again start rising from June 19, though the people may not witness a sudden spike.
The IMD has predicted isolated to scattered rainfall over Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab between June 16 and June 22.
For most of these days, the Met department has predicted "thunderstorms with rains". The good news is that no specific weather warnings have been issued for the period from June 17 to June 21.
In a statement, it said, "Isolated thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph) are likely over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Punjab on 16th & 17th June and during 19th-22nd June; West Uttar Pradesh on 17th June."
A couple of weather experts have opined that the Delhi-NCR region is likely to remain pleasant, despite sweltering heat in the month of June, due to the influence of a western disturbance and local weather activity. And, with the possibility of increased humidity, the rains haven't been ruled out.
For now, the significant drop in temperature has brought great relief for people from the scorching heat, and intermittent rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days.
The department has also advised people to remain cautious during the inclement weather.

Just hope the thunderstorm doesn't cause power cuts or tree falls like last time. We need rain but also some preparedness from municipal corporations.

Being from Canada, I never thought I'd see 31°C called "cooler"! But after living in Delhi for 2 years, I completely get it. Any break from 45°C is a blessing.
The humidity will be killer though. Right now it's pleasant, but once that humidity hits 65%, we'll be begging for dry heat again. Still, enjoying this while it lasts! 🙏
