The situation is being continuously monitored, and every possible assistance is being ensured for those affected. Our local MLA and municipal councillors are also extending their support in the relief efforts. The Delhi government stands firmly with the affected families in every situation during this difficult time," she added.

According to Delhi Police, the fire broke out early Sunday morning in a four-storey residential building in Vivek Vihar, resulting in the death of nine people and leaving at least one person injured.

Police said that five members of a family residing on the second floor lost their lives. The deceased have been identified as Arvind (60), his wife Anita Jain (58), their son Nishant Jain (35), daughter-in-law Anchal Jain (33) and their one-and-a-half-year-old grandson, Master Akash Jain.

From the first floor, Shikha Jain (45) succumbed to the incident.

Another family residing on the third floor also lost their lives in the tragic incident. The deceased include Nitin Jain (around 50 years), his wife Shailey Jain (around 48 years), and their son Samyak Jain (approximately 25 years).

One injured individual, identified as Naveen Jain (48), is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, officials said.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA from Shahdara, Sanjay Goyal, also expressed grief over the incident. He stated that a short circuit is suspected to be the primary cause of the fire, which broke out in a building located in Block B of Vivek Vihar and rapidly spread across all four floors, leading to the casualties.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the exact cause of the fire, while rescue and relief efforts remain ongoing.

Just saw the visuals on news. Chilling. Four storeys, one family per floor, and they all died except one injured man. The whole building seems to have burned like a matchbox. Where were fire escapes? Where were extinguishers? Short circuit in old wiring is common but preventable. CM Rekha Gupta has promised support, but the real question is what's being done to prevent this from happening again in thousands of similar buildings across Delhi.

I live in Vivek Vihar and saw the smoke from my balcony. It's a middle-class locality with narrow lanes. Fire tenders struggled to enter the lane. That's a bigger issue than any short circuit—illegal parking and encroachments block emergency access everywhere in East Delhi. The local MLA and councillor reaching out is good, but we need proper urban planning. My heart goes out to the Jain families. 💔

Terrible news. Having lived in Delhi for a few years, I know how quickly fires can spread in these dense residential areas. It's not just about the CM's response—the entire system of fire safety compliance in older buildings is lax in India compared to the West. The fact that one family on each floor all perished suggests no fire alarms, no sprinklers, no escape routes. Condolences to the families and hopes for Naveen's recovery.

It's heartbreaking but also infuriating. We see tragedies like Uphaar (1997), AMRI (2011), and now this—same pattern of poor fire safety, narrow access, and no accountability until people die. The government should set up a fire safety audit for all residential buildings over 3 floors in Delhi within 3 months. Not just press releases and condolences. Also, the injured man Naveen is the sole survivor—hope he gets the best treatment, free of cost.
