In BJP's decisive victory, two Assam ministers outshine CM Sarma in winning margins

In BJP's Assam win, ministers Kaushik Rai and Pijush Hazarika secure higher margins than Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, showcasing party's broad appeal.

"These record margins across geographically and demographically varied Assembly constituencies highlight the BJP's broad-based appeal in Assam - Party sources"

Guwahati, May 6

The Bharatiya Janata Party registered sweeping victories in the Assam Assembly elections, with several of its candidates winning by record margins, underscoring a strong mandate across regions.

The top five winning margins reflect not only electoral dominance but also the party's deepening connect with diverse Assembly constituencies in the state, party sources on Tuesday.

Leading the vote tally is Assam Minister Kaushik Rai from Lakhipur, who secured a massive margin of 99,401 votes.

Lakhipur, located in the Barak Valley's Cachar district, has traditionally seen multi-cornered contests, but Rai's decisive victory signals a consolidation of support in the Bengali-majority belt, where development issues and connectivity have remained key electoral themes.

In Jagiroad, Minister Pijush Hazarika won by a margin of 93,548 votes.

The Assembly constituency, situated in Morigaon district, is known for its industrial base, particularly the Nagaon Paper Mill area, and a mix of rural and semi-urban voters.

Hazarika's performance reflects the BJP's continued strength in central Assam, aided by infrastructure push and welfare outreach.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma retained his Jalukbari seat with a margin of 89,434 votes.

Jalukbari, an urban Assam constituency in Guwahati, has long been considered a BJP stronghold.

Chief Minister Sarma's victory here once again highlights his personal popularity and the party's firm grip over urban voters, driven by governance, civic improvements, and policy initiatives.

In southern Assam's Ramakrishna Nagar, Bijoy Malakar, won by 83,765 votes.

The Assembly constituency, also in the Barak Valley, has a significant rural population, and the BJP's strong showing indicates sustained support among grassroots voters, particularly on issues of welfare schemes and local development.

Meanwhile, in the tribal-dominated Jonai constituency, Bhuban Pegu emerged victorious with a margin of 80,124 votes.

Located in Dhemaji district along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, Jonai is a Scheduled Tribe (ST) reserved seat.

Pegu's win reflects the BJP's growing outreach among tribal communities, supported by targeted welfare measures and infrastructure development in border areas.

These record margins across geographically and demographically varied Assembly constituencies highlight the BJP's broad-based appeal in Assam, cutting across urban, rural, and tribal belts, and reinforcing its position as the dominant political force in the state.

The overall results reflected a decisive mandate in favour of the BJP, which won 82 out of the 126 seats in the Assam Assembly.

The Congress lagged behind with 19 seats, while regional parties such as the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured 10 seats each.

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal managed to win two seats each, while the Trinamool Congress opened its account with a single seat.

While I support the development agenda, I hope the government also focuses on job creation in these areas. Record margins don't always translate to employment for the youth. #JobsForAssam

Bhuban Pegu's win in Jonai is a big deal for tribal communities. Finally, border areas are getting attention from the government. But we need to see more tangible infrastructure in Dhemaji, not just promises. 🚂

Himanta Biswa Sarma's popularity is undeniable, but let's be honest - Jalukbari is a BJP stronghold, so the margin isn't surprising. The real story is how the party is consolidating in Barak Valley. Kaushik Rai's win by nearly 1 lakh votes is a message.

Impressive numbers, but as an observer, I'm curious about the opposition's collapse. Congress with only 19 seats is a steep decline. Regional parties like AGP and BPF are barely holding on. This is now a one-party state in Assam, which is both a strength and a risk.

Pijush Hazarika's work in Jagiroad is visible - the paper mill area is seeing new roads and better connectivity. But the real test is whether these record margins will actually result in faster development. Fingers crossed 🤞
