Bihar govt announces major education reforms, 1 lakh teacher recruitment plan in 5 years

Patna, May 23

As part of the new plan, the Samrat Choudhary-led Bihar government announced that 100,000 teachers will be recruited over the next five years.

Around 20,000 appointments are proposed to be made every year.

Taking to his official X account on Friday, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said that recruitment advertisements will now be issued annually in the month of July to streamline and regularise the appointment process.

A high-level meeting in this regard was held at the Chief Minister's residence in Patna, where Bihar Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari and senior leaders of the Education department were present.

Samrat Choudhary also directed the Education Department to formulate a transparent and simplified teacher transfer policy.

Under the proposed framework, female teachers would, wherever possible, be transferred to panchayats adjacent to their home panchayat within their home block and district.

The Chief Minister also directed that male teachers would be transferred to blocks adjoining their home block within their home district.

The move is aimed at making postings more practical and family-friendly while ensuring transparency in transfers.

Chief Minister Choudhary also announced a series of major initiatives aimed at strengthening the quality of education and improving administrative transparency in the state's school system.

During a high-level review meeting of the department, the Chief Minister said that ensuring access to quality education for every child remains a top priority.

The Bihar government announced that school uniforms for students across the state will now be supplied through Jeevika Self Help Group.

Officials said that the initiative is expected to ensure the timely distribution of uniforms while simultaneously strengthening women's empowerment by generating livelihood opportunities for women associated with self-help groups under Jeevika.

The Chief Minister said these measures are intended to improve educational infrastructure, enhance teacher availability, and promote inclusive development across Bihar's school system.

The decision of Chief Minister Choudhary came in the backdrop of recent agitation by the BPSC Teacher Recruitment Examination aspirants who were demanding notification for the recruitment of teachers in Bihar.

Impressive move by CM Choudhary. But 20,000 teachers per year - is that enough? Bihar has one of the worst student-teacher ratios in the country. Also, uniform distribution through Jeevika SHGs is a smart idea - women empowerment + timely supplies. Let's see actual implementation now.

Typical election year gimmick! They'll announce big numbers but ground reality is different. My cousin in Gaya has been waiting for a teacher transfer for 3 years. And what about quality? Recruiting 1 lakh teachers without proper training will just fill classrooms with unqualified people. 😐

Love the focus on female teachers! Transferring them closer to home is a huge relief - many women in Bihar leave teaching because of posting in distant villages. Also, Jeevika SHGs for uniforms is brilliant - it's like 'vocal for local' for school supplies. Hope other states follow this model. ✨

This is a mixed bag. While recruitment is needed, the announcement right after BPSC agitation seems reactive. Also, will these teachers be posted in rural areas where real shortage is? Or just fill urban schools? The transfer policy for men is also vague - 'adjoining blocks' could mean anything. Needs more clarity.

As someone from Bihar who now lives in Bangalore, this is promising. My parents still tell me stories of schools with just 2 teachers for 300 students. But 1 lakh over 5 years means only 20k per year - with Bihar's population of 12 crore, that's still a drop in the ocean. Need
