Assam braces for thunderstorms, heavy rain as IMD issues warnings

Guwahati, June 10

The India Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, across Assam over the next seven days, with several districts likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, officials said on Wednesday.

According to the district-wise weather forecast and warning issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, adverse weather conditions are expected to persist across western, central, and southern parts of the state between June 10 and June 16.

The IMD has warned that districts including Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Hailakandi and Sribhumi could witness thunderstorms accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall on different days during the forecast period.

In western Assam, districts such as Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Baksa are likely to experience intense rainfall, particularly between June 11 and June 13. Similar conditions are expected in parts of central Assam, including Tamulpur and Udalguri, where heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast at isolated locations.

The weather office has also predicted thunderstorm activity with lightning across most districts of the Brahmaputra Valley, including Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup (Rural), Darrang, Nagaon, Morigaon and Hojai. While some districts may see brief periods without warnings, rainfall activity is expected to remain widespread throughout the week.

In Upper Assam, districts such as Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat, Majuli and Dibrugarh are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, with isolated spells of very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Southern Assam districts, including Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi, are also expected to witness persistent rain and thunderstorm activity. Hailakandi and Sribhumi have been placed under warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on certain days.

The IMD has advised residents, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas, to remain alert and follow official weather updates. The department noted that warnings are valid from 8:30 a.m. of the specified day until 8:30 a.m. of the following day.

My family is in Dibrugarh and they said it's been raining non-stop since morning. The IMD warnings are good but local administration needs to be more proactive with drainage and relief camps. Every year we see waterlogging in Guwahati and nothing changes. 😤

Stay safe everyone! Especially those in Kokrajhar and Chirang. Thunderstorms are no joke - lost a tree in my compound last year during similar weather. Keep emergency numbers handy and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.

Living in Guwahati, I've learned to always carry an umbrella even when it's sunny! 🤣 The weather here changes so suddenly. But on a serious note, I hope the NDRF teams are on standby. Last year's floods in Hojai were devastating. Weather warnings are only useful if people actually follow them.

Half of Assam will be underwater again at this rate. The government should have cleared drainage systems before monsoon started. Also why is there no mention of relief measures in the article? Just warnings without solutions is frustrating for us locals.

For those asking about relief - the Assam State Disaster Management Authority has helpline numbers. But honestly, people in vulnerable areas should start moving their essentials to higher ground now. Prevention is better than waiting for rescue. ☔ Stay informed and stay safe, everyone!
