Amaravati, May 15

The Central Government has extended the tenure of Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary, G. Sai Prasad, for another six months.

According to an official announcement on Friday, his tenure has been extended from June 1 to November 30, 2026.

The Central Government granted this approval in response to a request made by the State Government.

Rajesh Kumar Yadav, Under Secretary to the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (Department of Personnel and Training-DoPT), informed the Principal Secretary of the State Government's General Administration Department (Political) via a letter regarding the six-month extension of Chief Secretary Sai Prasad's tenure, in accordance with Rule 16(1) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.

Although Sai Prasad was originally scheduled to retire at the end of this month, the State Government submitted proposals to the Centre seeking an extension of his tenure with the objective of continuing to utilise his services for an extended period.

Acting upon this request, the Central Government issued orders extending Sai Prasad's tenure by six months, effective from June 1 to November 30.

Sai Prasad assumed office as the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh on February 28, 2026. He took charge from K Vijayanand, who retired from service. The State government on November 29, 2025 issued orders extending the term of Vijayanand for another three months till February 28, 2026, and appointed Sai Prasad as his successor.

Sai Prasad was serving as Special Chief Secretary (Water Resources) when he was appointed as Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh.

A 1991 batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh Cadre, Sai Prasad first worked as Assistant Collector of Warangal in the combined Andhra Pradesh from June 1992 to May 1993.

Sai Prasad, who holds an M.Tech. degree, served in different positions, including the Chief Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA).

Good decision by the Centre to extend his tenure. Continuity is important for state administration, especially when a new capital is being built. But I wish the government would also focus on filling vacant IAS posts instead of giving extensions repeatedly.

Interesting that this extension came just before his retirement date. Seems like the state government was scrambling to keep him. But hey, if he's competent, why not? Better than getting a new CS who takes months to understand the local issues. 👀

Not a fan of these frequent extensions in bureaucracy. Rules exist for a reason - retirement at 60 gives space for younger officers. Hope Mr. Sai Prasad uses this time to resolve the pending water issues in Rayalaseema rather than just sit in the secretariat. 🤔

Another day, another extension in AP bureaucracy. The state seems to run on extensions these days - first the CS, then other senior officers. What about grooming the next generation? Seems like the system is stuck in a loop. 😅 Hope Sai Prasad proves his worth in these six months.

From Assistant Collector of Warangal to Chief Secretary - quite a journey! His M.Tech background in water resources could be valuable given AP's ongoing Polavaram and irrigation projects. Let's hope this extension brings stability to the state administration rather than becoming another political tool. 💧
