10,000 artistes to perform Bodo cultural dance before PM Modi

Assam prepares a historic cultural spectacle with 10,000 artistes performing the Bodo Bagurumba dance for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit.

"a moment of pride not only for the Bodo community but for Assam and the country as a whole - Himanta Biswa Sarma"

Guwahati, Jan 15

With just two days remaining for the grand Bagurumba Dohou, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the state is all set to witness a historic cultural moment as nearly 10,000 artistes come together to perform the iconic Bagurumba dance in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Taking to social media, the Chief Minister said the soul-stirring rhythms of traditional Bodo musical instruments such as the Sifung, Kham and Serja will resonate in unison, creating a rare and unforgettable cultural spectacle.

He described the event as a moment of pride not only for the Bodo community but for Assam and the country as a whole.

PM Modi will embark a two-day visit to Assam from January 17 where he will engage in a series of events.

Bagurumba, often referred to as the "butterfly dance", is one of the most significant and graceful folk dances of Assam, deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual life of the Bodo people.

Traditionally performed by young women, the dance symbolises harmony with nature, celebrating themes of fertility, peace and joy.

The fluid hand movements and gentle footwork mirror the flight of butterflies, reflecting the community's close bond with the natural world.

The dance is closely associated with the Bwisagu festival, which marks the Bodo New Year and the advent of spring.

Over generations, Bagurumba has evolved from a ritualistic community performance into a powerful symbol of Bodo identity and cultural pride.

Its music, led by the bamboo flute-like Sifung, the rhythmic Kham drum and the resonant Serja, adds depth and emotion to the performance.

The upcoming Bagurumba Dohou is being seen as unprecedented in scale, with thousands of artistes performing together, showcasing Assam's rich indigenous heritage on a national platform.

Cultural experts say the event reflects growing efforts to preserve, promote and mainstream traditional art forms while passing them on to younger generations.

As Assam prepares for the grand celebration, the event is expected to leave a lasting impression, highlighting the state's vibrant cultural diversity and reinforcing the message of unity through tradition.

While celebrating culture is great, I hope the focus remains on the art and the artists, not just the political optics. The Bodo community's heritage deserves the spotlight for its own sake.
