Bangladesh won't be part of Saudi-led military operations: FM Momen

Dhaka, Feb 13 : Bangladesh on Wednesday clearly stated that it would not participate in any military operation launched by Saudi Arabia, anywhere in the world, including Yemen.

Bangladeshi military will take action only in case of an attack on the two sacred mosques in two sacred cities -- Mecca and Medina, Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said, while addressing the media during a briefing on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's maiden visit to Germany after resuming office for the third consecutive term.

The reference of two sacred mosques in the speech of the Foreign Minister indicated the Kaaba, the most sacred monument of Islam, in Mecca and al-Masjid al-Nababi, the mosque of Prophet Muhammed in Medina, Anadolu Agency reported.

The remarks by the Foreign Minister came after Bangladesh agreed to sign a defence deal with Saudi Arabia, on February 4, to enhance military cooperation in the country. The deal was signed during Bangladesh's Army Chief Aziz Ahmed's visit to Saudi previous week.

According to the deal, Bangladesh will deploy around 1,800 troops in Saudi Arabia to defuse and remove mines along war-torn Saudi-Yemen border, as part of its commitment to any peace-building process.

However, the deal does improvise that Bangladesh will join the Saudi-led war, the Foreign Minister added.
