WTC final 2025: Aakash Chopra weighs in on Pat Cummins' impact

Aakash Chopra highlights Pat Cummins' leadership and all-round impact ahead of Australia vs South Africa WTC final.

"Pat Cummins is the biggest threat – Aakash Chopra"

New Delhi, June 10

As the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final 2025 draws near, anticipation is building for the clash between reigning champions Australia and determined challengers South Africa.

While speaking on JioHotstar and the Star Sports Network, JioStar cricket expert Aakash Chopra shared the pivotal role of Australia's skipper Pat Cummins, who has become synonymous with big-match performances and cool-headed leadership.

"Pat Cummins is the biggest threat," Chopra remarked.

"His leadership, his bowling when there is a partnership, his batting lower down the order--he contributes across departments. He leads from the front and always keeps the opposition under pressure," he added.

Cummins enters this WTC Final on the back of a stellar run as captain. Under his leadership, Australia clinched the previous WTC title by defeating India in the final, and followed it up with a historic ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 triumph, once again overcoming India in the decider on Indian soil. Now, Cummins has a golden opportunity to lead Australia to a third ICC title, further cementing his legacy as one of modern cricket's finest captains.

South Africa, on the other hand, are eyeing their maiden ICC title in the longest format and have assembled a formidable unit with a potent pace attack and determined batting order.

Australia has not lost a Test series in the past two years, winning away in New Zealand and Sri Lanka while retaining the Ashes in England in 2023.

They also defeated Pakistan and India at home, along with a draw against the West Indies, to secure a spot in the WTC decider against the Proteas.

Pat Cummins has been a nightmare for Indian cricket fans lately! 😅 After WTC and World Cup finals, I hope South Africa can stop him this time. But honestly, his leadership is world-class - the way he handles pressure situations is something our Indian captains should learn from.

Aakash Chopra is spot on about Cummins' impact. That man turns into a different beast in ICC tournaments! Still hurts remembering how he outplayed us twice in finals. Hope South Africa's pace attack can match up to him. Rabada vs Cummins will be 🔥

As much as I respect Cummins' skills, I feel the media is giving him too much credit. Our Indian team lost those finals because of our own mistakes, not just because of him. Let's see how he performs when the pressure is really on against SA's fiery pace attack.

Can't believe we have to wait until 2025 for this clash! 😫 But seriously, Australia's consistency in Tests is remarkable. They've been winning everywhere - SL, NZ, England. Hope our Indian team is taking notes on how to perform overseas consistently.

South Africa deserves an ICC trophy finally! Their pace attack of Rabada, Nortje and Jansen can match Australia blow for blow. Hope they don't choke this time like they often do in knockouts. Would be great for cricket if a new team wins the WTC.

While Cummins is excellent, let's not forget how strong Australia's entire team is. Smith, Labuschagne, Hazlewood - they have match-winners everywhere. That's what makes them so dangerous in ICC events. Our Indian team needs to develop this kind of depth.
