Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall triggers waterlogging in several parts of Thoothukudi

Severe waterlogging in Thoothukudi disrupts daily life as heavy rainfall continues. IMD issues yellow warning with residents struggling amid submerged roads and health concerns.

"Even an ambulance cannot enter our streets. We are unable to go to work, and children cannot go to school. - Thoothukudi Resident"

Thoothukudi, November 28

Severe waterlogging was witnessed in parts of Thoothukudi on Friday due to continuous widespread rainfall over the past few days that has left large portions of urban and suburban areas inundated.

With rainwater still not fully drained, heavy rain lashed parts of Thoothukudi around 5 am today, further disrupting the daily routine of residents already struggling with stagnant water.

Several roads and low-lying residential neighbourhoods remain submerged, heightening public concerns.

According to officials, necessary precautionary measures are underway to mitigate potential impact.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning to the Thoothukudi district, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls for today, along with strong surface winds. The warning for thunderstorms has been issued till November 29 (Saturday).

Earlier, the residents had alleged that no officials had come to inspect the area or even visit them. The residents also demanded that proper road facilities and drinking water be provided in the area immediately.

Residents insist that authorities must take swift action to resolve these long-standing issues faced by KVK Saami Nagar.

"Every time the monsoon season begins, we are forced to face the same challenges. With small children and elderly people at home, we are suffering a lot. Even an ambulance cannot enter our streets. We are unable to go to work, and children cannot go to school. A few families here are already affected by fever," one of the residents told ANI.

However, on November 26, Tamil Nadu minister Geetha Jeevan inspected waterlogging areas in the district.

According to Chennai's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) the Northeast monsoon has been vigorous over Tamil Nadu on November 24, and active over the state on November 22-23 and over South Tamil Nadu on November 25. On Wednesday (November 26), rainfall occurred in isolated places over the state, including a few places over South Coastal Tamil Nadu, whereas dry weather prevailed over Puducherry and the Karaikal region.

The low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of South Sri Lanka has become a 'well-marked low-pressure area', and is likely to move north-northwestwards to be concentrated into a depression.

Living in Chennai, we face similar issues every monsoon. The drainage systems in Tamil Nadu cities need complete overhaul. Hope the minister's inspection leads to some concrete action this time.

As someone who visited Thoothukudi last year, I'm shocked to see these conditions. The authorities need to prioritize citizen safety over everything else. No family should have to worry about ambulances not reaching them during emergencies.

Yellow warning means serious business. People should take all precautions and avoid unnecessary travel. Hope the corporation deploys more pumps to clear the waterlogging quickly.

While I appreciate the meteorological department's warnings, the real issue is urban planning. Coastal cities like Thoothukudi need climate-resilient infrastructure. The well-marked low-pressure area developing is concerning for the coming days.

My relatives live in Thoothukudi and they've been sharing photos of the situation. It's worse than what's being reported. Children missing school, people unable to go to work - this affects everyone's livelihood. Authorities need to act faster! 🙏
