Shameful: Mithun Chakraborty slams West Bengal government over attack on BJP leaders

BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty condemns attack on MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh during flood relief work in West Bengal, calls TMC actions shameful

"The manner in which our MP and MLA were attacked is very shameful - Mithun Chakraborty"

Los Angeles, October 7

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mithun Chakraborty on Tuesday termed the attack on BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh and MP Khagen Murmu as shameful and urged the BJP workers to extend their help in the flood relief work.

He said that instead of extending help to flood-affected people, the Trinamool Congress is resorting to violence.

"The manner in which our MP (Khagen Murmu) and MLA (Shankar Ghosh) were attacked is very shameful. Instead of extending help to flood-affected people, TMC is resorting to violence. I would like to tell my BJP colleagues to be with the public and help in relief work," Mithun Chakraborty said in a self-made video.

Earlier today, the Lok Sabha Secretariat wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) requesting them to get a 'factual note' from the West Bengal government regarding the recent alleged attack on Bharatiya Janata Party MP Khagen Murmu.

Some local persons reportedly attacked Murmu while he was visiting flood-affected areas in Jalpaiguri's Dooars region in West Bengal on October 6 to oversee relief and rescue operations, whereupon the member sustained serious injuries to the head. Along with Murmu, West Bengal MLA Shankar Ghosh also alleged he was attacked while distributing relief materials.

On October 6, LoP in the Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of orchestrating violence by sending her supporters to allegedly attack BJP leaders and workers and obstruct relief work.

Adhikari claimed that while BJP MPs and MLAs were targeted for visiting flood-affected areas in North Bengal and distributing relief. He alleged that MP Khagen Murmu sustained injuries, and MLA Shankar Ghosh's vehicle was attacked.

In a post on X, Adhikari wrote, "Mamata Banerjee is in full Panic Mode. She has realised it (quite late) that the People of West Bengal have despised her inhuman act of 'Dancing at Carnival with Celebrities' when North Bengal was reeling under floods and landslides, with many People losing their lives and thousands left shelterless. In contrast, BJP Bengal MLAs & MPs were on the ground doing their bit to provide relief to the affected People."

"So, she has now pressed the panic button and has now unleashed her goons belonging to the 'Special Community' and incited them to attack the BJP MPs and MLAs so that they can be prevented from engaging in relief work. MP Shri Khagen Murmu was brutally attacked and has been left with bloody injuries in Nagrakata today when he was accompanying BJP Bengal President Shri Samik Bhattacharya to the flood-affected areas. MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh's vehicle also came under attack in the presence of the Police. Mamata Banerjee, you can't intimidate BJP," the post read.

At least 18 people were reported to be killed in Darjeeling as in incessant rain that wreaked havoc in West Bengal's north on Saturday night and early Sunday, the district authorities confirmed on Monday.

As a West Bengal resident, I'm deeply disappointed. People are suffering in floods and politicians are busy attacking each other. Both sides need to focus on relief work instead of political drama.

While I agree violence is unacceptable, I wish Mithun Chakraborty had condemned the violence without making it political. Relief work should be above party politics during such crises.

When will our politicians learn? North Bengal is facing terrible floods and instead of united relief efforts, we're seeing this nonsense. Shame on everyone involved! 😠

The timing of these attacks is suspicious. When BJP leaders are actually doing ground work during floods, they get attacked. This reeks of political vendetta. Hope the MHA investigation brings out the truth.

As someone who has visited Darjeeling, my heart goes out to the flood victims. Political parties should compete in serving people, not in violence. This is not what democracy looks like.
