A resounding year that saw Indian Men's Hockey Team retain Asia No.1 status

India's men's hockey team reclaimed the Asia Cup, ended 2025 as Asia's top side, and built depth ahead of 2026's Asian Games & World Cup.

"Winning the Asia Cup was definitely a highlight... but I think Azlan Shah was one of the highlights of the year. - Captain Harmanpreet Singh"

New Delhi, December 30

A resounding victory at the Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar reinstated Indian Men's Hockey Team's status as the No.1 side in Asia. The title victory after a gap of eight years was a highlight of 2025 for Craig Fulton and team as they trounced giants like Korea, China and Malaysia in the tournament, as per a release.

The year started with a good outing at the home-leg of FIH Pro League, soon after the revamped Hockey India League (HIL) that saw some pacy performances from players on the fringes who were pushing for a place in the senior side.

The International season kicking off with Pro League in Bhubaneswar where India tasted good results against Spain, Germany, Ireland and England. The team led by Harmanpreet Singh won six out of the eight matches on the back of a long HIL season which began soon after the Olympic success where the team had won Bronze in Paris and backed it up with Asian Champions Trophy win in China.

However, the Pro League ended on a dull note for India in Europe where they could only muster one consolation win against Belgium and lost their matches against Australia, Netherlands and Argentina in June.

But they rewrote the script in August by lifting the Asian Crown. Another highlight for this squad was their outing in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup where India 'A' side, with most of their star players such as Harmanpreet Singh, Manpreet Singh, Hardik Singh rested, put up a valiant show. They lost the title by a whisker (0-1) to Belgium but beat Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand and Canada in an inspiring fashion.

"Winning the Asia Cup was definitely a highlight for the Indian Team but I think Azlan Shah was one of the highlights of the year for the Indian team where many of us from the main team were rested but the development squad ended up doing well. This puts us in good stead for a busy year in 2026 with Asian Games and World Cup being close to eachother and we can have different options in the squad," expressed Captain Harmanpreet Singh, as quoted from a release.

He capped off the year as the highest goal scorer for India.

So proud of the team! Harmanpreet leading from the front as always. The victory in Rajgir must have been electric. It's great to see hockey getting its due attention again in India. The Pro League home performance was brilliant, though the Europe leg shows there's still work to do against the very top sides.

The revival of HIL seems to be paying off. Having a strong domestic league is key for player development, as we saw with the fringe players. Craig Fulton and the support staff deserve a lot of credit for managing the squad so well across a packed calendar. Jai Hind!

As a longtime hockey fan, it's heartening to see this consistency. The bronze in Paris, then the Asian Champions Trophy, and now the Asia Cup. The team is building a winning habit. The one respectful critique – we need to find a way to carry that home Pro League form into the away matches in Europe.

Beating Korea, China, and Malaysia to become Asia No. 1 is no small feat! 🇮🇳 The tournament being held in Bihar (Rajgir) is also great for promoting the sport in other regions. Hoping this momentum leads to gold at the Asian Games next year!

The most impressive part for me is the squad depth. The main team wins the Asia Cup, and the 'A' team almost wins the Azlan Shah Cup! This means we have a strong bench, which is crucial for back-to-back big tournaments. Future looks bright for Indian hockey.
