Not right to say that Delhi is submerged...: Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma

Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma inspects Civil Lines area, claims no water present and criticizes media for creating unnecessary panic about Yamuna River flooding.

"There is not a drop of water in the Civil Lines area. It is not right to say that Delhi is submerged in the Yamuna River. - Parvesh Verma"

New Delhi, September 5

Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma on Friday visited the Civil Lines area of Delhi for inspection and said that there was not even a drop of water in the whole area, adding that it was not right to portray the whole condition as if the national capital had submerged in the Yamuna River.

Verma said unnecessary panic is being created among citizens amid the heavy rainfall in the national capital over the past few days.

Speaking to the reporters, Minister Parvesh Verma said, "There is not a drop of water in the Civil Lines area. The service road adjoining the ring road is 8 to 10 feet below the road level, and rainwater is being pumped out. It is not right to say that Delhi is submerged in the Yamuna River."

The Minister further stated that he will also visit Delhi's Nigam Bodh Ghat to assess the situation there.

Earlier in the morning, drone visuals from Loha Pul showed the Yamuna River flowing above the danger level following incessant rainfall.

Delhi's Monastery Market, Yamuna Bazaar, Vasudev Ghat and nearby residential areas were inundated amid a rise in the water levels of the Yamuna River. Machines were installed in the areas around Vasudev Ghat to pump out the floodwater.

Anticipating the possible flood situation, people residing in the low-lying areas were shifted to relief camps set up near Mayur Vihar Phase-1 as a preventive measure.

The warning mark of the Yamuna for the city is 204.5 metres, while the danger mark is 205.33 metres. Evacuation of people starts at 206 metres.

Due to heavy rain, the Yamuna water level had recorded an all-time high of 208.66 metres on Wednesday.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast for Delhi, a "generally cloudy sky with moderate rain" has been predicted for Friday.

But what about people in Yamuna Bazaar and Monastery Market? They are actually submerged! Minister should visit those areas instead of just Civil Lines. My relatives had to evacuate 😔

Yamuna reached 208.66m! That's historical high. While not all Delhi is underwater, let's not downplay the seriousness. Many poor families have lost everything in floods. We need compassion, not politics.

As an expat living in South Delhi, I can confirm our area is fine. But the drone visuals from Loha Pul are concerning. Maybe the truth is somewhere in between - some areas badly affected, others normal.

Why are ministers doing inspection tours for media? Just focus on helping affected people. Yamuna has crossed danger mark multiple times this season - this is a serious issue needing long-term solutions, not PR visits.

My heart goes out to those in relief camps. Instead of arguing about semantics, our leaders should ensure proper facilities at camps - food, water, sanitation. That's what matters right now 🫂
