Mizoram: JCM warns of mass movement if NH-306 & NH-06 between Kawnpui and Sairang not repaired

The Joint Civil Society of Mizoram (JCM) has warned of mass protests if the deteriorating NH-306 and NH-06 highways are not repaired immediately. The roads, crucial for Mizoram's connectivity, face landslides and severe damage, disrupting transport and businesses. JCM blames NHIDCL and the central government for delays in repairs. The group demands urgent action to prevent further economic and public hardship.

Aizawl, July 21

The Joint Civil Society of Mizoram (JCM) announced on Monday that it will organise a mass movement if the ongoing construction and repair work on the vital National Highways 306 and 06 between Kawnpui and Sairang is not addressed urgently.

According to an official statement, during a press conference held at the Aizawl Press Club, JCM convener Lalbiakmawia Ngente stated that he visited the section of the road between Kawnpui and Sairang with his team for assessment in July 2019.

Lalbiakmawia Ngente highlighted that the severely deteriorated condition of the road, which spans about 40 kilometres and serves as Mizoram's "lifeline", has made transportation almost impossible and that several areas are plagued with landslides, stagnant water, and thick mud.

Co-Convener Pu Lalrammawia also pointed out that due to the damage, the movement of trucks has significantly reduced, affecting both the general public and the business community, especially daily wage earners and transport operators.

JCM Secretary Vanlalsiama Chhangte said that from the current status of the roadwork, it is evident that urgent and serious measures are needed.

According to the statement, Vanlalsiama Chhangte and his team inspected the road and discovered several severely damaged spots, some stretching more than a kilometre.

The JCM secretary also said that the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) is responsible for the construction and repair of these sections.

He further urged the Central government, especially the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), NHIDCL, and the Government of Mizoram, to take swift and effective action, the report added.

As someone who traveled this route last month, I can confirm the conditions are horrible. Our taxi got stuck for 3 hours in mud! The authorities should be ashamed. Northeast development seems to be just political talk, no real action 😡

While I support the demand for better roads, mass movements might not be the best solution. The government is already working on many infrastructure projects across India. Maybe they need more time? Let's give them a reasonable deadline.

The economic impact of bad roads is often underestimated. My cousin runs a small business in Aizawl and his transportation costs have doubled because of these conditions. This affects prices of essential goods too. Immediate action needed!

NHIDCL has good projects in other states, why neglect Mizoram? This shows the typical Delhi-centric approach. Northeast deserves equal priority in infrastructure development. JCM is right to demand urgent repairs.

The photos of these roads circulating on WhatsApp are shocking! How do ambulances and school buses manage? This is a public safety hazard. Kudos to JCM for raising voice. Hope media keeps highlighting this issue 🙏
