Guwahati, April 28: Guwahati woke up to a power outage on the morning of Monday, as heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and overcast skies, swept through the city. Urban infrastructure severely impacted by sudden weather disturbance

The abrupt change in weather disrupted daily routines, with several areas experiencing flash floods.

The downpour led to significant waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across multiple parts of the city.

Localities such as Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, and Chandmari were among the worst affected and were submerged under persistent rainfall.

Power supply was interrupted on several major roads, adding to the city's woes.

In response, authorities deployed large pumps to remove the accumulated water from the flooded zones.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the rainfall is expected to continue through the rest of the day.

Officials from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) said teams had been dispatched to restore electricity in the affected areas and urged residents to stay indoors and away from fallen wires.

The sudden storm is being attributed to a local weather disturbance common during the pre-monsoon period in Assam.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast more such isolated showers over the next few days.

Meanwhile, heavy showers also swept across several districts of Assam, marking the beginning of pre-monsoon rain in the state.

Villages in districts such as Darrang, Nalbari, and Kamrup bore the brunt of the storm, with images emerging of tin roofs torn apart, trees uprooted, and fields submerged under water.

Farmers have reported extensive damage to paddy crops and vegetables that were nearing harvest.

In urban areas, streets turned into streams, traffic came to a standstill, and power outages were reported in multiple locations due to fallen electric poles and trees.

Meteorologists said the hailstorm was triggered by a sudden shift in upper air circulation combined with moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.

“Such events are not uncommon in April, but the intensity this time was unusual,” said a spokesperson from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati.

Earlier, in the previous week, rain lashed the city, bringing it to a standstill with widespread power cuts, waterlogging, and traffic snarls in several areas.

The downpour continued for over an hour, accompanied by strong winds and thunder.

Several localities, including Chandmari, Beltola, Zoo Road, and Maligaon, reported electricity outages as stormy winds brought down electric lines and trees.

Waterlogging was reported in low-lying areas such as Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, and RG Baruah Road, with knee-deep water in some stretches, disrupting the movement of vehicles and forcing pedestrians to wade through murky streets.

The storm, which struck late in the evening and continued through the night, brought with it high-velocity winds, sheets of rain, and hailstones.

Stay safe everyone! This rain is no joke - my street in Chandmari is completely flooded. Hope the authorities can fix the power soon, working from home is impossible without electricity 😩

The drainage system in Guwahati needs serious improvement. Every year it's the same story during rains. Maybe instead of temporary pumps, we need permanent solutions? 🤔

My heart goes out to the farmers! All their hard work destroyed in minutes. The government should provide compensation for crop damage. 🌾💔

APDCL workers are doing their best in these tough conditions. Saw them working in the rain near Zoo Road to restore power lines. Salute to their dedication! 👏

Had to cancel all my appointments today. The traffic is at a standstill! Maybe IMD should give more advance warnings next time so we can prepare better?

Nature showing us who's boss! Stay indoors if you can folks. My neighbor's tin roof flew off like paper in the wind. Scary stuff! 🌪️
