Govt institutions offer unmatched clinical exposure: Maharashtra CM inaugurates various health infrastructure projects in Nagpur

Maharashtra CM announces ₹1000 crore upgrade for Nagpur medical colleges, highlights Modi's sickle cell mission and unmatched clinical exposure in govt hospitals.

"Government institutions offer unmatched clinical exposure, but if infrastructure is neglected, their standard declines - Devendra Fadnavis"

Nagpur, May 19

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to free the country from the diseases of sickle cell and thalassemia and assured that quality treatment facilities will be made available in government hospitals.

"PM Modi has taken steps to free the country from sickle cell and thalassemia. All efforts will be made to create quality treatment facilities in government colleges here to free patients from this deadly disease," Fadnavis said in Nagpur.

He mentioned how a diverse group of people come to the Government Medical College and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College, which is why there is a need to provide modern facilities and resources.

"Government Medical College and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College are large medical institutions in Central India. Patients from all walks of life come here for treatment. However, modern facilities are needed. Emphasis is being placed on building modern resources here. Various infrastructure facilities will increase the quality of these institutions," he added.

In a post on X, he discussed the projects and underlined the need to upgrade health infrastructure in government medical colleges.

"The State Government has allocated a fund of Rs 1000 crore to upgrade the services and infrastructure at both the Government Medical College and Hospital, and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital to a state-of-the-art standard, addressing the lack of modern facilities and systems for improved education and patient care," his post read.

Talking about the need for better infrastructure, he said, "If Government medical colleges lack world-class infrastructure, they may fall behind private medical colleges or universities in today's competitive environment. Government institutions offer unmatched clinical exposure, but if infrastructure is neglected, their overall standard declines. In this context, facilities like auditoriums, skywalks, sports amenities, cath labs, and robotic surgery units have been developed, with several other works currently underway," CM Fadnavis said in the post.

He has also ordered the ongoing work to be completed within a year, with decisions to be made to set up dedicated facilities for treating sickle cell and Thalassemia, along with a bone marrow transplant unit.

"Also asked to complete ongoing works within a year so that the medical college can start serving the people. We will also make decisions to set up dedicated facilities for Sickle Cell and Thalassemia projects, along with a Bone Marrow Transplant unit. I also emphasised that the construction work of the Dental College must be completed swiftly," the Maharashtra CM said.

Minister of State Ashish Jaiswal, MLA Pravin Datke, MLA Krishna bhau Khopde, MLC Sandip Joshi, MLC Abhijit Wanjarri and other dignitaries were also present in the programme.

This is a much-needed initiative! Government hospitals are the lifeline for millions who can't afford private healthcare. Modernizing Nagpur's medical colleges will benefit not just Maharashtra but patients from neighboring states too. Hope they maintain quality during implementation. 👍

As someone from Nagpur, I've seen how overcrowded GMCH gets. While the ₹1000 crore allocation sounds impressive, I hope they also focus on increasing doctor-patient ratio and hygiene maintenance. Infrastructure alone won't solve healthcare challenges.

Focus on sickle cell and thalassemia is commendable! These genetic disorders affect tribal populations disproportionately. If Nagpur becomes a hub for treatment, it'll help Vidarbha region immensely. But will the bone marrow transplant unit be affordable for common people?

Good step, but why only Nagpur? Other cities like Aurangabad and Amravati also need upgrades. Maharashtra's healthcare shouldn't be Mumbai-Nagpur centric. Hope this is just the beginning of statewide improvements.

Robotic surgery units in government colleges? Wow! This could revolutionize medical education if implemented properly. But they must ensure faculty is trained to use these technologies. Otherwise it'll become another white elephant project.

While appreciating the initiative, I'm concerned about the 1-year deadline. Rushed construction often compromises quality. Better to take 18 months and do it right than have another infrastructure project needing repairs in 2 years. Healthcare buildings need to last decades!
