Gaurav Gogoi targets Assam CM over probe in singer Zubeen Garg's death

Assam Congress chief targets CM over missing manager and event organizer in singer Zubeen Garg's death case, alleges special treatment and BJP links in investigation.

"The role of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is extremely dubious - Gaurav Gogoi"

Guwahati, September 29

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the probe concerning the death of singer Zubeen Garg, saying ten days have passed and "we still don't know" where are his manager and chief event organizer.

"The role of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is extremely dubious. From the beginning of the case, we still don't know where his manager is. Where is his chief event organiser? These two people have very detailed information about the last few hours before Zubeen Garg's death. Assam Police is questioning other people," he said.

He said the two have been given until October 6 to appear before the police. "Why this special treatment?" he asked, alluding to media reports and alleging "links with BJP".

Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the Assam government has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the ongoing probe into Zubeen Garg's death.

"The Govt of Assam has submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Home Affairs to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the unfortunate demise of our beloved Zubeen. Once invoked, this will ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities--giving us access to case details and assistance to bring back the accused and secure justice," he said in a post on X.

Speaking to reporters, the Assam Chief Minister said that the next two-three days are crucial, as a team from the Assam police has already reached Singapore.

"When they (Ministry of Home Affairs) send it to Singapore to invoke, we will be able to go ahead much more in the coming days, because our police team is in Singapore. The next 2-3 days are more important," he said.

Meanwhile, a senior official of Assam police said that Shyamkanu Mahanta "is hiding in Singapore".

Earlier, look-out notices were issued against Shyamkanu Mahanta, and Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen Garg's manager, in connection with the death of the famous singer.

Mahanta and Sharma have been directed to appear before the CID office in Guwahati by October 6.

Assam DGP Harmeet Singh stated that, as per the directive of the Assam Chief Minister, the CID/SIT probe will be conducted transparently and properly.

"One SIT/CID is already in Delhi, and one team will go to Singapore. The process of the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) is on. I appeal to the people of Assam to show their faith towards the Assam police in the last 7 days, and this probe will reach a final conclusion. We should follow the legal process. Let them do their work and request all to support us," the Assam DGP said.

Zubeen Garg died in Singapore on September 19 after an alleged drowning incident. His body was flown to Delhi and later brought to Assam.

I appreciate that the government is taking international legal steps through MLAT. Singapore cooperation is crucial for this case. Let's trust the process and hope justice is served soon.

Gaurav Gogoi is right to question this. Why October 6 deadline? If they're hiding in Singapore, why give them time? This looks like political protection. Zubeen deserves better investigation.

As someone who loved Zubeen's music, this whole situation is heartbreaking. The authorities need to be completely transparent. No political games should be played with someone's death investigation.

The police team is already in Singapore and MLAT process has started. Let's give them a chance to work. International investigations take time. Hope the next 2-3 days bring clarity. 🤞

While I understand the frustration, I think the government is following proper legal channels. MLAT with Singapore is the right approach for cross-border investigations. Let the process complete.

Zubeen's voice represented Assam's soul. His untimely death needs thorough investigation without any political interference. Both sides should focus on getting justice rather than scoring points.
