"With the extended dates, voters will be able to submit forms easily, and BLOs will also get relief. - Brajesh Pathak"

Lucknow, Dec 1

Reacting to the extension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) deadline, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak on Monday said that the move will allow voters to submit their forms more easily and provide relief to Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

Speaking to IANS, Brajesh Pathak said, “The Election Commission has launched a major campaign across 12 states to prepare a neutral and transparent voters’ list. With the extended dates, voters will be able to submit forms easily, and BLOs will also get relief. I thank the Election Commission for this initiative.”

Earlier on Sunday, the Election Commission of India issued a notification extending the ongoing three-stage SIR in 12 Indian states and union territories (UTs) by seven days.

According to the earlier schedule, the enumeration period, that is, the completion of the collection and digitisation of the voters' enumeration forms, was fixed for December 4. As per the new schedule, the new date has been fixed for December 11.

The date for the rationalisation or re-arrangement of polling stations has also been fixed for December 11.

As per the earlier schedule, the last date for publication of the draft electoral rolls was December 9, which has now been extended to December 16.

As per the new schedule, the period for filing claims and objections has been fixed between December 16, 2025, and January 15, 2026.

The dates for the notice phase, which includes issuance, hearing, verification and decision on enumeration forms and disposal of claims and objections to be done concurrently by the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) have been fixed between December 16, 2025, and February 7, 2026.

The new date for the checking of health parameters of electoral rolls and obtaining the ECI’s permission for final publication is February 10, 2026.

The new date for the final publication of the electoral roll is February 14, which was earlier fixed at February 7.

Since the beginning, the Opposition parties have been accusing the Election Commission of conducting the SIR exercise hurriedly at the behest of the BJP. Trinamool Congress has been the most vocal against the poll panel on this issue.

While the extension is helpful, I hope the process itself is made simpler. Last time, my father had to visit the booth three times to get his name corrected. The forms are confusing for elderly voters. The focus should be on accessibility and clear guidance, not just deadlines.

The opposition's criticism seems misplaced here. If the EC is giving more time for a thorough and accurate list, how is that a bad thing? A neutral voter list is the foundation of our democracy. Let's support the institutions that are trying to do their job properly.

As a former BLO, I can tell you this relief is much needed! The paperwork is enormous, and we often work late into the night. A week's extension makes a huge difference in ensuring accuracy. Thank you for acknowledging the ground-level challenges.

Interesting to see the process laid out so clearly. The timeline extending into 2026 shows this is a massive logistical exercise. The key will be in the "health parameters" check – hope it effectively weeds out duplicate or erroneous entries for a clean electoral roll.

Everyone should check their names on the electoral roll when it's published! So many young people, especially those who have moved cities for work, find their names missing. This is our fundamental right. Use this extended period to get it sorted. 🇮🇳
