EU, US agree to fast track trade negotiations

EU's Von der Leyen and US's Trump to expedite trade talks after phone call.

"It's positive to see engagement at the level of the presidents. - Paula Pinho"

Brussels, May 26

The European Commission has said that President Ursula Von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump have agreed to fast track trade negotiations and to stay in close contact following last night's phone call.

Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said the Commission said there was a negotiating team in place led by trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic, who spoke by phone with the US commerce secretary Howard Lutnick this afternoon.

Trump has said he would pause his threatened 50 per cent tariffs on the European Union until 9 July, after a call with von der Leyen.

"It's positive to see that there's engagement at the level of the presidents and from our side, we always said that we are ready to make a deal,'' Pinho said. (ANI/ WAM)

Good to see trade negotiations moving forward. India should also push for similar fast-tracked deals with both EU and US - our economy needs these partnerships. But we must ensure our interests are protected, unlike in some past agreements.

Interesting development! 👏 While US-EU talks progress, I hope India isn't sidelined in global trade. Our IT and pharmaceutical sectors especially need fair access to these markets. The 50% tariff threat shows how unpredictable international trade can be.

Western countries always prioritize each other in trade. India must strengthen ties with other developing nations too - Africa, Latin America. We can't put all our eggs in the EU-US basket. Self-reliance should be the ultimate goal.

The speed of these negotiations is impressive! Maybe India can learn something here about efficient trade deals. But I worry - will this US-EU deal affect India's exports? Our textile and engineering goods compete directly in these markets.

While this is positive news globally, I hope our negotiators are watching closely. The US has been tough on India regarding tariffs and H1B visas. We need to play our cards right - maybe use this as leverage in our own trade talks with both blocs.
