Ellen Pompeo on 'Grey's Anatomy' exit: Would make no sense

Ellen Pompeo opens up about her commitment to Grey's Anatomy, financial considerations, and her deep connection with the show's legacy.

"If I were to walk away completely, everybody gets to make money from my hard work for 20 years and I wouldn't make any money - Ellen Pompeo"

Washington, April 16

Ellen Pompeo, star of Grey's Anatomy since 2005, has expressed her reluctance to leave the show entirely.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, in a recent interview, Pompeo said that exiting the series would be illogical both emotionally and financially.

Reportedly, Pompeo's current contract has her earning USD 20 million annually.

She emphasized that leaving the show would allow others to profit from her 20 years of hard work without her benefiting financially.

"If I were to walk away completely, everybody gets to make money from my hard work for 20 years and I wouldn't make any money," she said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

Pompeo also highlighted the emotional connection she shares with the show's fans.

"The show means a lot to people. I want to have an attitude of gratitude toward the show," she added.

Although Pompeo negotiated her contract in 2022 to reduce her episodes and spend more time with her family, she seems committed to her role as Meredith Grey.

"I'm very lucky to be able to get to work sometimes and take time off. I have a nice balance in my life," she said.

Pompeo has also ventured into other projects, including her series 'Good American Family'.

She initially hesitated to join the project but was drawn to the role, which she felt she could "completely disappear into."

I totally get where she's coming from! After 20 years, Grey's is her baby. Plus that $20M salary... who would walk away from that? 😅

Respectfully, I think the show needs fresh blood. The quality has declined over the years and maybe a complete cast overhaul would help.

Smart business move. She built this empire and deserves to keep benefiting from it. More power to her!

I love that she acknowledges the fans' emotional connection. Many actors wouldn't care, but she gets how much this show means to people.

The reduced episode count was a great compromise. Lets her pursue other projects while keeping her Grey's paycheck. Win-win!
