Nagaon, November 15

An earthquake of magnitude 2.9 hit Nagaon district of Assam on Friday at 11:04 IST, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported.

According to the NCS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

"EQ of M: 2.9, On: 14/11/2025 23:04:07 IST, Lat: 26.47 N, Long: 92.75 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nagaon, Assam," the NCS said in a post on X.

Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes. This is because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking and potentially more damage to structures, as well as greater casualties.

My cousin lives in Nagaon and felt this! She said it was like a sudden jolt but lasted only a few seconds. Scary to think this was at shallow depth of 10km 😨

As someone who experienced the 2015 Nepal earthquake while traveling, I appreciate how quickly NCS is sharing this data. Public awareness is crucial for earthquake preparedness.

While the reporting is good, I wish our media would also educate people about what to do during earthquakes. Many in rural Assam don't know basic safety measures.

Assam sits in seismic zone V, the highest risk category. Even small tremors like this remind us we need to be prepared for the big one. Time to check our emergency kits!
