Despicable act of crushing democratic values: Rajasthan CM on 50th anniversary of Emergency

Rajasthan CM calls Emergency a dark period, credits RSS for resistance as BJP marks 50 years since Indira Gandhi's authoritarian move.

"The date of 25th June 1975 has been recorded in Indian history as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' - Bhajanlal Sharma"

Jaipur, June 26

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Wednesday slammed the Congress government on the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency and described the Emergency as a dark period in Indian history, where democratic values were crushed by the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi-led government.

Sharma emphasized that June 25, 1975, is recorded in Indian history as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas', highlighting the government's attack on democratic institutions.

Addressing a seminar on 'Emergency and Martyrdom Day of Syama Prasad Mookerjee in Jaipur, Sharma said "The date of 25th June 1975, has been recorded in Indian history as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. We have to tell this to the coming generation and also tell them that the then Indira Gandhi government declared emergency in the country and also did the despicable act of crushing the democratic values of India."

He praised the role of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Jan Sangh workers in resisting the Emergency and fighting for democracy. Sharma noted that their efforts helped shape the country's future.

"Our Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers, Jan Sangh workers gave as much strength at that time as they could and they did the job of giving a reply. Today we realise what would have been the condition of our country if our nationalist people had not moved in this direction...," he added.

Meanwhile, Tripura BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee also slammed Congress and stated that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi implemented the Emergency to save her seat.

"We are celebrating a black day. We know the then-PM, Indira Gandhi, implemented the Emergency to save her seat as PM. All the people, including leaders, media persons and even common people, were jailed and tortured...We are presenting what Indira Gandhi did against the Constitution of India," Bhattacharjee told ANI.

On Wednesday, Rajib Bhattacharjee participated in a public meeting at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan, marking 50 years of the Emergency as 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas'.

Sharing the visuals on X, the Tripura BJP President wrote, "Fifty years ago from today, during the cursed dark chapter of India's democracy, the 'Emergency,' the atrocities committed against the people are being brought before the next generation through an event organised by the Tripura Government's Information and Culture Department at the Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan, titled Samvidhan Hatya Divas."

"I participated in its exhibition and discussion meeting," the post read.

Emergency was indeed a black spot on our democracy. But today's politicians should focus on current issues rather than digging up history for political gains. We need to strengthen institutions, not just point fingers.

My grandfather used to tell stories about how newspapers had blank editorials during Emergency. We must never forget this period, but also acknowledge how far we've come as a democracy. 🇮🇳

While Emergency was wrong, current government should be careful about throwing stones from glass houses. Democracy means respecting all voices, not just those who agree with you.

The real tribute to Emergency martyrs would be to ensure no government ever gets the chance to repeat such actions. We need stronger constitutional safeguards and independent judiciary.

It's ironic that the same party which opposed Emergency is now using similar tactics against political opponents. History should teach us lessons, not become political ammunition.

Young Indians must learn about Emergency, but through balanced historical accounts - not political propaganda from any side. Our democracy is stronger when we know both achievements and failures.
