Dermot Mulroney gives update on 'My Best Friend's Wedding' sequel, says I know nothing about it

Dermot Mulroney gives an update on the potential 'My Best Friend's Wedding' sequel while Julia Roberts hints at revisiting her iconic role.

"I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote. – Dermot Mulroney"

Washington DC, July 26

After nearly 30 years, one of the most beloved romantic comedies of the 1990s could be getting a sequel. Actor and musician Dermot Mulroney recently revealed "there is talk of a sequel" to his 1997 PJ Hogan-helmed 'My Best Friend's Wedding', in which he co-starred with Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett, according to Deadline.

"I know nothing about it," the actor said while giving an update about the sequel, adding, "Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote."

'My Best Friend's Wedding' is a 1997 romantic comedy film directed by PJ Hogan from a screenplay by Ronald Bass, who also produced the film. The film stars Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everett.

It features Roberts and Mulroney as Julianne and Michael, childhood friends who made a deal to marry each other if they were both still single by the time they turned 28. Days before her 28th birthday, Michael announces he's marrying 20-year-old Kimberly (Diaz), forcing Julianne to realise she's in love with her best friend, subsequently plotting to ruin the wedding.

When asked which of her films she'd like to see a sequel to, Roberts showed an interest in revisiting her role as Jules in 2023. "I think, maybe, My Best Friend's Wedding," she revealed on Watch What Happens Live, reported Deadline.

"Because there are so many people in it, and to see what they're doing and how Kimmy and Michael's marriage is going," added Roberts, before revealing whom she thinks Michael should have chosen: "Well, I mean, of course, Jules. But he married Kimmy," as per the outlet.

With Diaz coming out of her 11-year acting retirement to star in Netflix's 'Back in Action' this year, perhaps the 4x Golden Globe nominee will be up for the sequel as well, according to Deadline.

Typical Hollywood - milking old franchises instead of creating new stories. We have enough remakes and sequels already. Focus on fresh content please!

OMG! I still remember watching this with my cousins during summer vacations. That restaurant scene where they sing "I Say a Little Prayer" gives me goosebumps even today ❤️ Would be interesting to see if they can recreate that chemistry after 30 years.

As someone who grew up watching this movie repeatedly, I'm cautiously excited. But the original ending was perfect - messy and realistic. Hope they don't try to "fix" it with some forced happy ending.

Honestly, I'd rather see Bollywood make its own version! Imagine Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in these roles - would be epic! Our filmmakers should adapt this story with Indian cultural elements.

The original was such a mood! But I wonder - will the sequel address how problematic some of Jules' actions were? Times have changed and what seemed funny then might not land the same way now.

If they're really doing this, they better bring back the entire original cast. No recasts please! And Rupert Everett's character George was the best part - hope
