Delhi: Parents meet CM Rekha Gupta on School Education Bill; express gratitude

Parents express gratitude as Delhi CM Rekha Gupta and Education Minister Ashish Sood pass landmark School Education Bill to curb arbitrary fee hikes.

"No minister has ever had such a commendable performance. – Jahanvi Kaur, Parent"

New Delhi, August 6

Parents of school students met Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday, thanking them for the School Education (Fee Regulation and Transparency) Bill, 2025.

On Delhi School Education (Fee Regulation and Transparency) Bill, 2025, Jahanvi Kaur, a parent whose child is enrolled in a school in Delhi, said, "No minister has ever had such a commendable performance. The fact that this bill was passed is a very wonderful thing. We were afraid to ask the school why the fees keep increasing because we were afraid that some staff member could do something to our child. I hope that the future of our students will be even brighter."

Education Minister Ashish Sood on Monday tabled the "Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Bill, 2025" in the Delhi Assembly, stating that the legislation seeks to end commercialisation of education and take action against those exploiting it for profit.

The proposed law aims to regulate the arbitrary fee hikes by private schools in the national capital, providing relief to lakhs of students and their families.

"Education is not a thing to be sold. This bill aims to halt the commercialisation of education. We are bringing the bill to take action against those mafias who are selling education..." Sood said while tabling the bill.

The Bill was tabled on the first day of the Monsoon session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly, which commenced on Monday and will continue until August 8. However, the session may be extended depending on the exigencies of legislative business.

In a separate statement, the Delhi Education Minister said, "Today, I have come here with a permanent solution to the problems faced by millions of parents and children in Delhi, and to a legacy issue that has been ignored for decades."

Sood stated that education is "a sacred duty -- a duty we must fulfil for the progress and prosperity of our motherland."

He emphasised that the aim of education should not be 'earning', but rather 'learning' and nation-building.

"This bill is a small effort on our part to honour Dr. Mukherjee's vision and to ensure that education does not become a burden on the people of India, but instead becomes a path leading them to a better future," he said.

Good initiative but implementation is key. Private schools always find loopholes. Government should also focus on improving quality of government schools so parents don't have to pay hefty fees for basic education.

As a working mother, this bill gives me so much relief! Every year we had to cut down on essential expenses just to pay school fees. Education should be accessible, not a luxury. Thank you Delhi government! ❤️

While I appreciate the intent, I'm concerned about schools cutting corners in infrastructure or teacher salaries to compensate. The bill should have provisions to maintain quality standards too.

This is a progressive move! In my home country, we have similar regulations. Education should never be treated as business. Hope other Indian states follow Delhi's example. Well done!

Schools will now introduce 'development fees', 'maintenance charges' and other fancy names to bypass this. Government needs to monitor this strictly. But still, a step in right direction. Jai Hind!
