Chhattisgarh Govt, GAIL sign MoU to develop gas-based fertiliser project

Chhattisgarh government and GAIL sign MoU to study setting up a 12.7 LMT urea plant along a gas pipeline corridor, aiming to boost state's industrial growth.

"This MoU marks a significant step towards enhancing the industrial landscape and ensuring self-sufficiency in fertiliser production for our farmers. - Vishnu Deo Sai, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh"

Raipur (Chhattisgarh), December 23

The Chhattisgarh government and GAIL (India) Limited joined hands for the development of a greenfield gas-based fertiliser project in the state.

A non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this was signed in the presence of the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Vishnu Deo Sai. The MoU was signed by Rajat Kumar, Secretary (Commerce & Industries), Government of Chhattisgarh and Rajeev Kumar Singhal, Director (Business Development), GAIL (India) Limited.

As per the MoU, GAIL will undertake detailed techno-economic studies to set up a urea manufacturing plant of 12.7 Lacs Metric Ton (LMT), to be strategically located along GAIL's Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda Natural Gas Pipeline (MNJPL) corridor.

Based on the techno-economic evaluation, an investment decision will be taken for setting up the fertiliser project by GAIL.

The Government of Chhattisgarh will provide facilitation across all stages of the project, including support for feasibility studies, identification and allocation of suitable land parcels, coordination with State and Central authorities, facilitation for statutory approvals and enabling infrastructure necessary for project implementation.

As someone who follows sustainable development, I'm pleased to see a move towards gas-based production. It should be cleaner than coal-based plants. The key will be ensuring the environmental impact assessment is thorough and public.

Good step, but let's not celebrate just an MoU. We've seen many such announcements that later get stuck in red tape or 'feasibility studies'. The government must ensure fast-track clearances and transparency in land allocation. Our farmers need affordable urea, not just promises.

Strategic use of the existing gas pipeline corridor is smart planning. This can reduce logistics costs. Hope the local youth get skill development and priority in the jobs that will be created. Chhattisgarh has great potential!

Interesting development. Reducing dependency on imported fertilisers is crucial for India's food security. A domestic plant of this scale, if executed well, could have a significant positive impact on the regional economy.

My father is a farmer in Bastar. The price of fertiliser is a constant worry. If this plant comes up nearby, it should mean stable supply and lower costs for us. Fingers crossed! 🤞 The government facilitation they mention must be real on the ground.
