Cabinet approves Rs 3,626 crore Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2

Pune Metro Phase-2 gets Rs 3,626 crore approval for 12.75 km Vanaz-Wagholi corridors, boosting connectivity to IT hubs and easing congestion.

"This strategic expansion will unlock Pune’s economic potential and enhance urban transport infrastructure – Official Statement"

New Delhi, June 25

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the Rs 3,626.24 crore Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2 in Maharashtra, comprising the Vanaz to Chandani Chowk Corridor and Ramwadi to Wagholi Corridor, as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor under Phase-1.

These two elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, connecting fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years, according to an official statement issued after the Cabinet meeting.

The estimated project cost is Rs 3626.24 crore, to be equally shared by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral and multilateral agencies.

This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing Corridor-2 and aligns with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which envisions a continuous Chandani Chowk to Wagholi Metro corridor to strengthen East-West mass transit in Pune, the statement explains.

These extensions will serve key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential pockets, increasing the share of public transport and ridership across the network. The new corridors will also integrate at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court) to enable seamless multimodal urban travel.

Under long-term mobility planning, intercity bus services from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will be integrated at Chandani Chowk, while those from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will connect at Wagholi, allowing passengers to easily access Pune’s Metro system. These extensions will also help decongest arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast, and eco-friendly mobility options.

After completion of these corridors, the projected incremental daily ridership for the entire Line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 lakh in 2037, 2.87 lakh in 2047, and 3.49 lakh in 2057.

The project will be implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), which will execute all civil, electro-mechanical, and related works. Pre-construction activities such as topographical survey and detailed design consultancy have already commenced.

This strategic expansion is poised to unlock Pune’s economic potential, enhance its urban transport infrastructure, and contribute significantly to sustainable and inclusive development across the metropolitan region, the statement added.

Great news for Pune! The Chandani Chowk to Wagholi connection will be a game-changer for daily commuters. Hope Maha-Metro maintains the same quality as Phase-1. Just hoping they complete it within deadline - infrastructure projects in India often get delayed. 🤞

As someone living in Kharadi, this is much needed! The traffic on Nagar Road is unbearable during peak hours. But ₹3,626 crore seems quite expensive - hope there's proper audit of expenditure. Public money should be used judiciously.

Connecting IT hubs and residential areas is smart urban planning. But what about last-mile connectivity? Metro stations need proper bus/auto integration. Otherwise people will still use private vehicles to reach stations.

Excellent move! Pune's growth needs such infrastructure. But please ensure minimal disruption during construction. The Hinjewadi metro work has caused major traffic chaos. Proper planning can prevent this in Phase-2 areas.

Good to see intercity bus integration planned at Chandani Chowk. Pune-Mumbai travelers will benefit greatly. Hope they maintain cleanliness and safety standards like Delhi Metro. Pune deserves world-class public transport! 🇮🇳

While metro expansion is welcome, what about pedestrian infrastructure? Many areas lack proper footpaths. Metro + walkable streets = perfect combo for sustainable mobility. Hope PMC coordinates with Maha-Metro on this.
