Bhai mil ke decide kar lo...: Anurag Kashyap criticizes Censor Board amid 'Phule' controversy

ANI April 17, 2025 178 views

Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has strongly criticized the Central Board of Film Certification over the controversial censorship of the biographical drama 'Phule'. The film, which explores the revolutionary work of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule against caste discrimination, has faced objections from a section of the Brahmin community. Kashyap's social media critique directly challenges the ongoing casteism in Indian society, questioning why a film about historical social reformers would be suppressed. The movie's release has been delayed to April 25, with potential cuts that could fundamentally alter its powerful narrative about social equality.

The film, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha, was initially set to release on April 11, on the occasion of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule's birth anniversary, but was postponed due to objections from a section of the Brahmin community.

Anurag Kashyap took to his Instagram handle to share his thoughts on the issue, questioning the existence of casteism in India.

"Bhai mil ke decide kar lo. India mein casteism hai ya nahi..." (Brother, let's decide together. Does casteism exist in India or not?), he wrote.

The 'Gangs of Wasseypur' director believes that 'Phule' is among several films facing suppression due to its bold and unapologetic themes.

He cited other examples, including 'Punjab 95,' 'Tees,' and 'Dhadak 2,' suggesting that these films are being targeted for reflecting uncomfortable truths.

Drawing from his personal experience, he recalled his first theatre production, which was centred on the lives of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule.

He questioned the objections raised by the Brahmin community, particularly pointing out the irony that if casteism had truly been eradicated in India, as claimed by some political figures, there would be no reason for the community to take offence.

Kashyap wrote on Instagram, "If casteism didn't exist in this country, why would they have needed to fight against it?"

Kashyap also raised questions about how the community had access to the film before its official release.

He further criticised the censor board for its lack of transparency and for not openly stating what specifically bothered them about the movie.

Meanwhile, Phule's release has been delayed to April 25, with the film now facing cuts demanded by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

In response to these censorship actions, Prakash Ambedkar, the president of the Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi, staged a protest in Pune, asserting that removing crucial scenes would strip the film of its intended message. "If those scenes are removed from Phule, the purpose of the film is lost," he said.

'Phule' movie is directed by Ananth Mahadevan, the film stars Pratik as Jyotirao Phule and Patralekhaa as Savitribai Phule.

The story highlights their fight against caste discrimination and gender inequality.

Anurag Kashyap always speaks his mind! More power to him for calling out this nonsense. The film should be released as it is - we need more stories like Phule's in our cinema. 👏

I respect Kashyap's views but I wish he'd present his arguments more diplomatically. The "bhai mil ke decide kar lo" approach might alienate people who actually need to hear this message.

This is exactly why I stopped watching Bollywood films. Either they make mindless comedies or their meaningful films get butchered by censorship. What's left to watch?

Can't wait to watch Phule! Pratik Gandhi is such a brilliant actor and this story needs to be told. Hope the cuts aren't too severe 🤞

The real question is - how DID they get access to the film before release? CBFC needs to answer this. Smells like favoritism to certain groups.

Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule's work is more relevant today than ever. If we can't even make films about social reformers without controversy, what hope do we have for actual social reform? 😔
