According to the reports, a 4-day-old infant died at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the government-run hospital on Monday.

The Assam Chief Minister assured that strict action would be taken if negligence is found.

"The Principal of GMCH has formed an inquiry committee to probe the incident," Assam CM said.

The probe will be conducted by a three-member committee comprising Additional Chief Secretary L Sweety Changsan, Dr Anup Barman and a Child Specialist of AIIMS.

Good that CM has taken immediate action. But why wait for such incidents to happen? Our government hospitals need better infrastructure and more staff. NICU should have the best facilities, not just in cities but across Assam.

So many tragic incidents in one day - the infant death and the railway accident. My prayers for all the families. We need better safety measures everywhere - hospitals, railways, roads. Life is too precious to lose due to negligence.

The railway accident is equally tragic. Elderly women going for morning walk shouldn't meet such fate. Railways need to create more awareness about track safety, especially in rural areas where people use tracks as pathways.

Hope the probe committee does proper investigation and not just a formality. We've seen many probes in the past that lead nowhere. The family deserves answers and accountability from the hospital administration.

While the infant death is tragic, let's not jump to conclusions before investigation completes. Medical complications can happen even in best hospitals. But yes, if negligence is found, strict action must be taken.
