Arnold Schwarzenegger shares how he, Sylvester Stallone ended their feud

Arnold Schwarzenegger opens up about his past rivalry with Sylvester Stallone and how they reconciled through Planet Hollywood.

"We hated each other - Arnold Schwarzenegger"

Washington DC, June 19

Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger recalled his past feud with Sylvester Stallone.

"We hated each other," the actor-politician, 77, told Andy Cohen on SiriusXM's Radio Andy, reported People.

Schwarzenegger and Stallone, 78, famously butted heads throughout the 1980s as they emerged as action movie stars. They've since become friends, starring together in 2013's Escape Plan and several instalments of The Expendables franchise, as per the outlet.

"We were kind of attacking each other and doing nasty things and saying nasty things about each other and all these stupid things," recalled the Fubar star.

"All of a sudden, I started working with Robert Earl and Keith Parish to create the Planet Hollywood franchise, those restaurants," explained Schwarzenegger. "The next thing I know is I get a phone call from my lawyer, who was also Sly's lawyer, he said, 'Arnold, is there any kind of room for Sly in Planet Hollywood?' ," reported People.

The Planet Hollywood restaurant chain was launched in New York City in 1991 with the backing of Schwarzenegger, Stallone and several other A-listers.

"Sure enough, we made it work," said the Terminator star of collaborating with Stallone. "And Bruce Willis became part of Planet Hollywood, Whoopi Goldberg became part of Planet Hollywood, Chuck Norris... It really was kind of an international cast."

In the years since the action stars' infamous feud, both have looked back on the experience with new eyes. In a joint interview for TMZ Presents: Arnold & Sly: Rivals, Friends, Icons that aired in April 2024, Stallone admitted that when Schwarzenegger burst onto the scene, he reacted by thinking, "Finally, something to motivate me. Because he is, dare I say it, competition, a threat, whatever word you wanna use. As soon as I saw him, it was like bang, two alphas hitting," reported People.

"There's no two ways about that: He was very helpful in my career because I had something that I could chase," agreed Schwarzenegger.

Season 2 of Schwarzenegger's action comedy Fubar premiered on Netflix on June 12. Among his upcoming projects is the holiday movie The Man with the Bag, in which he'll play Santa Claus, reported People.

What a great lesson in friendship and competition! Reminds me of our Bollywood stars who had rivalries but later worked together. Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra come to mind. Healthy competition pushes everyone to do better. 👍

I grew up watching both their movies in the 90s! Never knew they had such a feud. Their action films were so popular in India - my brother used to collect all their VHS tapes. Good to see legends respecting each other now.

Interesting how business brought them together. In India too, many rival film producers end up collaborating when there's money to be made. But I wish they'd make more proper action films like before - today's CGI stuff can't match their raw physicality!

Their rivalry reminds me of SRK-Salman's past issues. Glad they patched up too! Hollywood or Bollywood, ego clashes happen but maturity wins in the end. Though I must say, their action movies were quite violent - not sure I'd want my kids watching them now 😅

These guys defined masculinity for a generation. But looking back, their movies had very little diversity or meaningful stories. Today's action heroes at least try to have some depth beyond muscles and one-liners. Still, nostalgia makes me love their films!

Planet Hollywood used to be such a big deal! I remember going to the one in London as a kid and being so excited. Shame most closed down. Their reconciliation story is heartwarming - proves even tough guys can change and grow. #FriendshipGoals
