Apple has announced a free repair program for select 2023 Mac Mini M2 models that may fail to power on. The issue affects only a small batch manufactured between June and November 2024. Owners can verify eligibility by entering their serial number on Apple’s support site. Repairs will be free and covered for three years from the purchase date.

"The issue affects a very small percentage of devices" – Apple
Cupertino, June 15: Apple has launched a worldwide repair program for certain Mac mini models equipped with the M2 chip, following reports that a small number of units are unable to power on.

Key Points

1

Limited batch of M2 Mac Minis may fail to power on

2

Free repairs available for eligible 2023 models

3

Check serial number on Apple’s support site

4

Coverage valid for three years from purchase

The tech giant confirmed that the issue affects only a limited batch of devices and does not extend to any other Mac mini variants.

According to Apple, the affected Mac minis were manufactured between June 16 and November 23, 2024.

Although the company did not disclose specific details regarding the cause of the malfunction, it acknowledged that the issue could prevent the computers from turning on altogether.

To determine eligibility, Mac mini owners can visit Apple's official support website and input their device's serial number.

If the unit qualifies, Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider will carry out the necessary repairs free of charge.

Apple emphasised that the repair initiative is part of a global program, ensuring support regardless of where the device was originally purchased.

The service coverage will be valid for up to three years from the date of purchase, offering users ample time to seek assistance if needed.

While the company has remained tight-lipped about the exact technical root of the issue, it appears to be limited in scope, affecting what Apple describes as a "very small percentage" of devices.

Customers are encouraged to back up their data before seeking service and to check their eligibility online prior to visiting a service location.

Devices that meet the criteria will be serviced according to Apple's standard repair protocols.

This move follows a series of recent quality assurance efforts by Apple as it continues to refine and support its lineup of Mac computers powered by its proprietary silicon.

Good initiative by Apple! 👏 But why does it take them so long to acknowledge hardware issues? Many Indian customers might have already paid for repairs before this announcement. Hope they get refunds too.

Just checked my Mac Mini - thankfully not affected! But this makes me wonder - for the price we pay for Apple products in India (with all the import duties), quality control should be perfect. Still better than some other brands though.

The 3-year coverage is decent, but service centers in smaller Indian cities are limited. Hope Apple improves their service network here. Also, will they provide loaner devices during repairs? That's what we really need!

As a designer using Mac Mini for work, this is concerning 😟. Apple should be more transparent about what exactly went wrong in manufacturing. We professionals depend on these machines for our livelihood.

At least they're owning up to the issue. Unlike some companies that pretend problems don't exist. But I wish they'd extend this repair program to older models too - my M1 Mac Mini has heating issues they never addressed.
