71st National Film Awards: Rani Mukerji wins Best Actress for 'Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway'

Rani Mukerji bags her first National Award for 'Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway,' a gripping legal drama based on a true story.

"It gives immense happiness... our audience wants to watch different sorts of movies. – Rani Mukerji"

New Delhi, August 1

The 71st National Film Awards have been announced, and Rani Mukerji has won the Best Actress award for her powerful performance in 'Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway.' This also marks her first-ever National Award.

The film is a legal drama directed by Ashima Chibber and also stars Anirban Bhattacharya, Neena Gupta, and Jim Sarbh.

Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway is based on the real-life story of Sagarika Chakraborty and Anurup Bhattacharya, an Indian couple living in Norway, whose children were taken away by Norwegian authorities in 2011. Rani plays Debika, a mother who goes up against an unfamiliar legal system to win back her kids.

The film highlights the cultural misunderstandings between Indian parenting traditions and Western child welfare systems.

Earlier, while speaking to ANI, Rani had shared her experience of being part of the film and what made her do experimental cinema.

"It gives immense happiness as then we realise that our audience wants to watch different sorts of movies, content and if we present good content and story then they will come to watch," the actress told ANI.

Apart from Rani's win, the 71st National Awards have also recognized several other films and artists. Best Cinematography was awarded to The Kerala Story. Best Choreography went to Vaibhavi Merchant for Dhindhora Baje in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Kathal bagged the Best Hindi Film award, while the Best Female Playback Singer award went to Shilpa Rao.

While Rani acted well, I feel the film took too many creative liberties with the real case. The actual events were more complex than shown. Still, congratulations to her for the award - it's surprising this is her first National Award after so many great performances!

As someone who lived in Norway for 5 years, this film opened my eyes to how our parenting styles can be misunderstood abroad. Rani portrayed the cultural clash beautifully. More such meaningful cinema please!

Finally some recognition for content-driven films! Bollywood needs more movies like this instead of just masala entertainers. Rani proves again why she's one of our finest actors. What a comeback after Mardaani series!

The scene where she breaks down in court had me in tears. But I wish they had shown more of the Norwegian perspective too - it's not always black and white. Still, hats off to Rani for bringing this important issue to mainstream cinema.

Great to see National Awards recognizing meaningful cinema. Though I'm surprised The Kerala Story won cinematography - the film was controversial but technically brilliant I guess. Overall good selections this year!
