11 years, 151 foreign trips, 72 countries: Mallikarjun Kharge criticises PM Modi's foreign policy

Congress chief Kharge questions Modi's 151 foreign visits, citing India's global isolation, IMF-Pakistan loan, and ceasefire controversies.

"PM Modi has made 151 foreign trips in 11 years, yet our India stands alone! - Mallikarjun Kharge"

New Delhi, May 20

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy, questioning the effectiveness of his frequent international trips.

Kharge alleged that despite Modi's 151 foreign visits to 72 countries, including 10 trips to the US, India seems isolated on the global stage.

Kharge questioned whether these trips have yielded meaningful results for India's global standing.

He accused PM Modi of making foreign visits more focused on photo opportunities than diplomatic achievements.

In a post on X, Kharge said, "PM Modi has been making frequent foreign trips for the last 11 years, but our India is now alone! In the last 11 years, Prime Minister Modi has made 151 foreign trips and visited 72 countries. Out of these, he has visited the US 10 times. Yet, our country stands alone under the Modi government's foreign policy. Is it the Prime Minister's job to visit foreign countries and only pose for photos?"

Kharge highlighted the International Monetary Fund (IMF's) USD 1.4 billion loan to Pakistan and the sudden ceasefire declaration during anti-terror operations as examples of India's diminishing influence.

"In addition, the IMF has provided support by providing a loan of $1.4 billion to Pakistan. A ceasefire was suddenly declared while our brave Army was conducting operations against terrorists," he added in his post.

He criticised Modi for not addressing US President Trump's claims of brokering the India-Pakistan ceasefire, suggesting a lack of clarity and transparency in India's foreign policy.

"The US President has insulted our country by saying, "I brokered" the ceasefire between India and Pakistan about 7 times. The entire country was united in the tough action against terrorists, but Modi ji is trying to cover up the issue by not providing clarity to the people of the country regarding US President Trump's statements, so far," added the Congress President.

Earlier, Kharge today criticised the Modi government for alleged security lapses that led to the Pahalgam terror attack, resulting in 26 deaths.

Kharge claimed that the government failed to provide adequate security arrangements for tourists, despite being aware of potential security threats.

Mallikarjun Kharge said, "26 people were killed in Pahalgam because the Modi government did not provide security there. The centre did not provide police security or forces to tourists. Modi did not say anything about this. There were people going to Kashmir on the 17th, but Modi did not go to Kashmir, because his intelligence security told him not to go, as there would be chaos in Kashmir."

While foreign visits are important, I agree with Kharge ji that we need more transparency about outcomes. What concrete benefits have these 151 trips brought? More FDI? Better trade deals? Just counting countries visited feels like tourism statistics rather than diplomacy. 🇮🇳

Modi ji's foreign visits have definitely raised India's profile globally. Remember how the world stood with us after Pulwama? But Kharge makes valid points about Pakistan getting IMF loans while we face terror attacks. Foreign policy needs both visibility AND substance.

Instead of political mudslinging, both sides should focus on real issues. Yes, PM's trips may be excessive, but Congress leaders did foreign trips too when in power. The real question is - how do we counter China's growing influence in our neighborhood? That's what keeps me awake at night.

As someone from Kashmir, I'm more concerned about the security lapses than foreign trips. 26 lives lost is unacceptable! Whether it's UPA or NDA, our leaders must prioritize citizen safety over everything else. Tourists are our economic lifeline - protect them better!

The Trump ceasefire comments are worrying. If America is mediating between India-Pakistan without our consent, that's serious. Our foreign policy should be 'India First', not 'Photo Ops First'. Hope MEA clarifies this properly instead of staying silent.

Can we please move beyond this 'foreign trips = bad' narrative? In today's globalized world, face-to-face diplomacy matters. But yes, government should publish a white paper showing achievements from these visits - trade numbers, strategic partnerships etc. Transparency helps everyone!
