INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 18, 2017 : Creating a functional bonus room is the bane of many homeowner's dream homes. These spaces can often have unconventional floor plans and inadequate natural light, making it a hard space to decorate.
Lifestyle blogger Sara Davis of Sincerely, Sara D. has partnered with VELUX Skylights to tackle the one room in her home that she hid from her fans — the bonus room designated as the man cave. This large room that spans the length of a three car garage had only one tiny window, until now.

With the narrow layout of the room, Davis chose to incorporate four VELUX No Leak Solar Powered "Fresh Air" Skylights along the north wall of the bonus room to bring in the most natural light possible. To enhance the space and create a fifth wall for this re-inspired man cave, she removed the popcorn ceiling and painted the slanted ceiling walls to draw the eye up. Dark Charcoal black-out blinds in the skylights help to tie the room together and add a fun pop of color.

Davis worked with Circle City Skylights, a VELUX 5-Star Skylight Specialist, for the skylight installation. When they began cutting the holes for the skylights, Davis knew she made the right decision, because light immediately began to fill the space, instantly making the room feel larger.

"We are in awe of the difference the skylights have made in our Man Cave," Davis said. "We knew more lighting would be great for the space, but we had no idea how great of an impact natural light would make in the room."

The skylights are installed in pairs about five feet apart on one side of the room. Under the first set, the installers created a bench. Under the second set, they fashioned a set of shelves into the wall.

Due to the narrow shape of the bonus room, some unique opportunities were presented for Randy Gray, owner of Circle City Skylights, and his team. "Because the skylights sit a little farther down the sloped ceiling, we thought a shelf and a bench would be functional additions for this bonus room," Gray said. "Every room is different, whether it lacks windows or doesn't get any direct sunlight, and skylights can often solve these problems in a simple and elegant way. In Sara's case, adding skylights made the room more functional because of the abundant natural light they bring in and the shelf and bench were icing on the cake."

Davis' husband may have not realized the impact either, because this man cave is now turning more into a family room. To learn more about VELUX Skylights, visit
