Resigned from Rajya Sabha as was told to stay away from Punjab: Sidhu
(2 years ago)
New Delhi, July 25 : Former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu has finally broken his silence and said he had quit the Rajya Sabha membership as he was asked to stay away from Punjab by his party.
Addressing a press conference, Sidhu said: I resigned from the Rajya Sabha as I was told to stay away from Punjab. How could I leave my roots? How could I abandon those people who reposed faith in me for four times during elections?
He said, After winning four elections, I was asked to stay away from Punjab and not just once but for 3-4 times.
I would choose Punjab even over my families. I will stand always for the welfare of Punjab, claimed Sidhu choosing to stay silent on which party he might join in future.
Sidhus wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who herself is also a BJP member, however, told media earlier that she will not follow her husbands footstep and remains with the party.
According to media reports, Sidhu, 52, could join the Aam Aadmi Party. The speculation was boosted by AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwals tweet that stated: People can give their rt hand for an RS seat. Ever seen a sitting RS MP resigning to save his state? I salute Sidhu ji for his courage.
Sidhu has been reportedly upset with the BJP since 2014, when his parliamentary constituency of Amritsar was assigned to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who lost the election.
