Arattai Adds Aadhaar Verification to Stop Impersonation on Its Platform

Zoho Corporation's Arattai app has introduced an optional Aadhaar-based identity verification layer to combat impersonation. Users can verify their identity through the Aadhaar app to receive a permanent green badge. The feature is voluntary and does not store users' Aadhaar data. It also adds end-to-end encryption, encrypted cloud backups, and a hide phone number option.

Zoho's Arattai introduces Aadhaar-based identity verification to curb impersonation

New Delhi, July 29

Zoho Corporation's instant messaging and VoIP calling app Arattai on Wednesday introduced an Aadhaar-enabled identity verification layer aimed at curbing identity spoofing and digital impersonation attempts on its privacy-first platform.

The optional feature allows users to verify their identity through the Aadhaar app and receive a permanent green verification badge, enabling others to identify authentic accounts and helping users filter out spam by choosing to receive messages only from verified profiles.

According to the company, the feature is available across Android, iOS, Windows and Mac platforms.

Users can access it through the profile settings by selecting the 'Get Verified' option and completing the verification process using the Aadhaar app, it added.

"By introducing an optional Aadhaar verification layer, we are delivering a reliable space without adding unnecessary friction to the user experience. This architecture ensures that users can validate their peer-to-peer interactions on their own terms," said Jeri John, Global Product Head, Arattai.

However, the company clarified that the verification process is entirely voluntary and Arattai does not store any Aadhaar details of users.

The new feature builds on Arattai's existing account verification programme, under which standard verified profiles receive a Blue Badge, while official government accounts are assigned a Grey Badge to prevent impersonation of public organisations and officials.

Arattai -- which was soft-launched in 2021 -- has been built entirely in India and is positioned as a privacy-focused messaging platform that does not rely on invasive data tracking, targeted advertising or user surveillance.

Moreover, the messaging app supports 10 Indian languages, including Hindi, Gujarati, Odia and Tamil.

Alongside Aadhaar verification, the company also rolled out a range of new privacy and security features, including end-to-end encryption for personal chats and broadcasts, encrypted cloud chat backups for Google Drive and iCloud, and a 'Hide Phone Number' feature that conceals users' contact details in public groups.

Good move, but I'm still cautious about linking Aadhaar to any app, even if they claim not to store data. The track record of data leaks in India is concerning. Why can't they just use phone number OTP verification like everyone else? Also, end-to-end encryption is a must – glad they added that.

Interesting approach. As someone who works in cybersecurity, I appreciate that the verification is optional and doesn't store Aadhaar details. The green badge for verified profiles and grey badge for govt accounts is a smart visual system. But for widespread adoption, they need to focus on user experience – most Indians aren't tech-savvy enough to navigate Aadhaar app integration smoothly.

This is brilliant! My mom keeps getting spam calls on WhatsApp from fake profiles. If Arattai becomes popular in India, the verification badge will save elders from scams. Plus, supporting 10 Indian languages is a big win for rural users. Zoho is showing global companies how to balance privacy and security properly. 👏
