Zelenskyy Seeks Middle East Drone Defense Deals to Bolster Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlights Ukraine's growing engagement with Middle Eastern and Gulf nations, who are keen to learn from its hard-earned expertise in countering drone attacks. He positions Ukraine's knowledge in modern warfare, particularly against 'shahed' and FPV drones, as a valuable commodity for exchange. In return for this support, Zelenskyy states Ukraine requires critical assistance in areas like ballistic missile defense and financial resources for its own war effort. Zelenskyy emphasises growing Middle East partnership to strengthen Ukraine's defence

Ukraine's President seeks Middle East partnerships, trading drone warfare expertise for help with ballistic threats and defense funding amid war.

"We are engaging with countries in the Middle East and the Gulf, which now show a strong interest in Ukraine's experience in defending against drones. - Volodymyr Zelenskyy"

Kyiv, March 26

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has underscored Ukraine's increasing engagement with countries in the Middle East and the Gulf, particularly in light of the growing interest in Ukraine's experience in defending against drone attacks.

Speaking about the region's evolving security concerns, Zelenskyy noted that countries are particularly keen on learning from Ukraine's expertise in countering the use of drones, an area where the country has gained significant experience due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy wrote, "We are engaging with countries in the Middle East and the Gulf, which now show a strong interest in Ukraine's experience in defending against drones. We already see that not only 'shaheds' are being used in the region, but there is also growing evidence of the use of FPV drones. This is modern warfare, and everyone must be prepared for it."

The President emphasised Ukraine's unique knowledge and expertise in modern warfare, particularly in drone defence, and how this could benefit countries in the Middle East and the Gulf. However, Zelenskyy also made it clear that in return for providing support in areas like drone defence, Ukraine requires assistance in other critical defence sectors.

"Ukraine has this expertise, and in exchange for our support, we need help in areas where we face greater challenges," he stated. "This includes protection against ballistic threats and financial resources for defence."

Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of collaboration and mutual benefit in these international partnerships, stressing that the world's current security landscape demands coordinated action. He also pointed out that Ukraine's engagement with Middle Eastern countries is not just strategic, but necessary to strengthen the nation's defence capabilities.

"The situation in the world now is such that only coordinated and joint actions can guarantee real results and genuine security. We are being blocked in Europe, and as long as this risk remains, we must seek out additional opportunities to strengthen ourselves," he said.

The Middle East and the Gulf, according to Zelenskyy, present critical opportunities for Ukraine to bolster its defence while fostering mutually beneficial relationships.

It's a pragmatic approach. The Middle East has the financial resources, Ukraine has the hard-earned battlefield knowledge. This is how modern geopolitics works – a barter system for security. However, I hope these partnerships don't further complicate an already volatile region. 🤔

The world is truly interconnected. Conflict in Europe creates demand for expertise that affects the Gulf. India must watch these developments closely. Our own defence needs regarding drones, especially on our borders, are significant. Perhaps there are lessons for us here too.

While I understand Ukraine's need to seek allies everywhere, this feels a bit transactional. "We give you drone knowledge, you give us money and missiles." It's realpolitik, for sure, but the article glosses over the human cost behind that "expertise." Every lesson learned came from tragedy.

Zelenskyy is a shrewd leader. He's turning Ukraine's defensive war into a strategic asset. This is exactly the kind of innovative thinking needed in a multi-polar world. The mention of being "blocked in Europe" is telling. When one door closes, you have to find another. More power to them.

Drone warfare is the future, and sadly, Ukraine is the testing ground. Their experience is invaluable. If Gulf nations are investing in this knowledge, it shows where global security priorities are heading. India's DRDO and private sector should be deep in similar R&D. Jai Hind! 🇮🇳
