Uthappa Doubts SRH's Title Hopes, Cites Bowling Weakness Despite Aggressive Batting

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has dismissed Sunrisers Hyderabad as serious contenders for the IPL 2026 title. He argues their aggressive batting approach is entertaining but insufficient, as their bowling unit lacks the penetration needed to win the trophy. Uthappa highlighted the challenge of Hyderabad's batting-friendly pitches, where even quality pacers can struggle. He pointed to last season's failures, where the bowlers could not defend totals when the top-order batters did not fire.

  • Bowling unit too weak for title win
  • Hyderabad's flat wickets challenge pace

"I won't consider SRH as serious title contender this season": Robin Uthappa ahead of IPL 2026

Former cricketer Robin Uthappa says Sunrisers Hyderabad's weak bowling unit makes them unlikely to win IPL 2026, despite their aggressive batting.

"I won't consider SRH as a serious title contender this season. - Robin Uthappa"

New Delhi, March 21

The former India cricketer Robin Uthappa believes Sunrisers Hyderabad is 'not a serious title contender" in this season of the Indian Premier League despite having an aggressive batting lineup.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Uthappa explained why SRH's aggressive batting approach won't be enough for them to lift the IPL trophy.

"SRH's aggressive batting is entertaining to watch. But batting like that won't help them win the IPL. Their bowling is a bit on the weaker side. Bowlers are the ones who make you win the trophy," said Uthappa.

Shivam Mavi, Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga, Harshal Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy are the fast-bowling options of the SRH, with Harsh Dubey and Zeeshan Ansari leading the spin-bowling.

Uthappa suggested that SRH's bowling is a concern and the bowlers need to bowl with not too much pace on Hyderabad's 'flat wickets'.

"In Hyderabad, where they play seven matches, the pitch is a batting paradise. It is a super belter wicket. Even someone like Mohammed Shami could not be penetrative on those flat wickets. You need a bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He is a very clever guy. He swings the ball, changes pace, bowls yorkers. At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, you don't want to put too much pace on the ball because the ball does not seam around much. I don't think SRH have the bowling unit right now that can back the instability their aggressive batting can cause if the top order does not fire."

SRH suffered a big blow ahead of the season when their skipper, Pat Cummins, was ruled out of the first few matches due to an injury. Ishan Kishan will lead the franchise in his absence.

Uthappa also stressed that SRH's bowling has failed to defend whenever their batters have failed to score a big total.

"We saw what happened last season. Apart from Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen, no other batter was able to step up. When the top order failed, the bowlers were not able to defend the totals. So I won't consider SRH as a serious title contender this season," concluded Uthappa.

SRH squad for IPL 2026 season:

Salil Arora, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, Ravichandran Smaran, Aniket Verma, Abhishek Sharma, Brydon Carse, Harsh Dubey, Liam Livingstone, Kamindu Mendis, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Mavi, Pat Cummins, Amit Kumar, Krains Fuletra, Praful Hinge, Eshan Malinga, Harshal Patel, Sakib Hussain, Shivang Kumar, Onkar Tarmale, Jaydev Unadkat, Zeeshan Ansari.

As a neutral fan, I love watching SRH bat! Head and Klaasen are pure entertainment. But Robin is right, trophies are won by balanced teams. Last season proved that. Their bowling just doesn't have the same fear factor. Hope they prove everyone wrong though! 🤞

Completely disagree with Uthappa ji. This is T20 cricket! A powerful batting lineup can win you many games on its own. Look at their powerplay scores. If Abhishek and Head get going, they can post 220+ regularly. Bowling just needs to be decent then.

His analysis about the Hyderabad pitch is spot on. It's a graveyard for bowlers. You need clever bowlers like Bhuvi, not just pace. Looking at their squad, I don't see that kind of experience. Jaydev Unadkat and Harshal Patel will be crucial, but can they be consistent?

Respectfully, I think Uthappa is being a bit harsh. Every team has weaknesses. SRH has match-winners. If Cummins returns fit for the playoffs, everything changes. IPL is a long tournament, form and momentum matter more than paper strength.

As an SRH fan, this is painful but true. We've been crying for a good Indian pace bowler for years. We let go of Bhuvi and now have no one to lead the attack. Mavi is injury-prone. The management needs to focus on building a proper bowling unit next auction.
