New Delhi, March 10

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday that women's health is a top priority for the state government and praised the significant role played by women in the healthcare sector.

Sharing her views at the "Women in the Medical Profession (Multi-specialty Meet)" programme at a hospital, Chief Minister Gupta added that through improved healthcare services, awareness programmes and the expansion of medical facilities, the Delhi government is committed to ensuring that every woman has access to quality healthcare.

The Chief Minister noted that today women are contributing across the medical field -- as doctors, surgeons, researchers, nurses and health specialists.

She said their work goes beyond providing treatment to patients as it also plays a vital role in building a healthier and safer society.

Chief Minister Gupta added that the sensitivity, compassion and dedication women bring to the profession make the practice of medicine more humane.

The programme, held at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, was attended by senior doctors, medical experts, nursing staff and a large number of women healthcare professionals.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister praised the hospital, describing it as a symbol of excellence, dedication and trust in healthcare for decades.

She said that while the institution has provided quality treatment to millions of patients, it has also made significant contributions to medical education, research and the advancement of modern healthcare services.

The hospital, she added, has played a commendable role in encouraging women in the medical profession and providing them opportunities to take on leadership roles.

Chief Minister Gupta said that women doctors, nurses, researchers and healthcare workers at the hospital are making meaningful contributions to society through their talent and commitment.

Their tireless work and spirit of service not only improve patients' lives but also serve as an inspiration for future generations, she added.

She expressed confidence that the hospital, along with their dedicated women medical professionals, will continue to play an important role in raising awareness about health and building a healthier, more informed, and empowered society.

Good to see recognition for women in medicine. My sister is a surgeon and the dedication is immense. But the government must also address the safety concerns for nurses and female staff working night shifts. Empowerment needs a safe environment.

Words are good, but we need to see the budget allocation. How much is actually being spent on women's health schemes versus what is announced? Regular audits and transparency in these programmes would build more trust.

Having worked in public health in India, this is a crucial area. The sensitivity women bring to healthcare, especially in maternal and child health, is undeniable. Scaling up community health workers (ASHA workers) with better training and pay would be a game-changer.

Absolutely true! Women doctors have often been more patient with my elderly parents. Hope this focus includes mental health services for women as well. The stress on working women and homemakers is rarely addressed in our primary health centres.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is indeed an institution. Praising it is fine, but the government should partner with such private hospitals to subsidize care for underprivileged women. Public-private partnerships can make quality care accessible. A good step in the right direction.
