'We have to rebuild Bengal': Minister Dilip Ghosh promises immediate action after BJP forms government in state

West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh vows to rebuild Bengal after BJP forms government. Suvendu Adhikari becomes first BJP CM. PM Modi, Amit Shah attend swearing-in.

"We have to rebuild Bengal... There is no law and order; people were living in fear - Dilip Ghosh"

Kolkata, May 10

West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh on Sunday said that the newly formed BJP government in the state faces the massive challenge of rebuilding governance and restoring public confidence after coming to power in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony of the new cabinet in Kolkata, Ghosh said, "We have to rebuild Bengal... There is no law and order; people were living in fear... We have to work on everything, and it will take time. However, we will get to work immediately, and you will be able to see the change."

The remarks came as senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal's first BJP Chief Minister, marking a historic political transition in the state after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a sweeping victory in the Assembly elections. Along with Ghosh, BJP leaders Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik were sworn in as ministers in the new cabinet.

The grand oath-taking ceremony in Kolkata was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Former BJP national president JP Nadda, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami were also present.

The BJP scripted history in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections by winning 207 seats, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress, which managed to secure only 80 seats.

Adhikari further strengthened his position by winning both the high-profile Bhabanipur and Nandigram constituencies. According to Election Commission figures, he defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by 15,105 votes.

The election also witnessed record voter participation, with polling percentages crossing 92 per cent across the first two phases, making it one of the highest turnouts in the state since independence.

I voted for BJP because I wanted change, but I'm not naive. Dilip Ghosh says "we have to rebuild Bengal"—but where's the detailed plan? Promises are easy; action is hard. The education system in rural areas is a mess, and unemployment is sky-high. Let's see if they focus on ground-level issues or just make noise.

Fascinating political shift. As someone who follows Indian politics from abroad, this victory for BJP in Bengal is monumental. Mamata Banerjee's loss in Bhabanipur especially—15,000 votes margin? That's a decisive message. But the real test is governance. Hope they actually deliver infrastructure and jobs, not just rhetoric.

"People were living in fear"—true, for many of us. But let's not forget, BJP needs to earn our trust. I'm a Bengali Hindu who felt unsafe during TMC's reign, but I've also seen how divisive politics can harm communities. My prayer is that this new government prioritises unity and peace, not just party interests.
