"We cast the wrong person for a role": Peter Jackson breaks silence on Ryan Gosling's exit from 'The Lovely Bones'

Washington DC, May 18

Filmmaker Peter Jackson has finally addressed actor Ryan Gosling's much-discussed exit from the 2009 film 'The Lovely Bones', saying recasting an actor is ultimately the responsibility of the filmmakers, according to Variety.

Gosling was originally cast as the father of Saoirse Ronan's character in the adaptation of 'The Lovely Bones'. However, he was later replaced by Mark Wahlberg after gaining 60 pounds for the role without Jackson's approval.

Speaking during a conversation at Cannes after receiving an Honorary Palme d'Or, Jackson reflected on the casting change.

"I won't talk about any particular examples of actors because it's a personal, private thing and it's not their fault," Jackson said, as per the outlet.

"Anytime we recast an actor, it's actually our fault because we didn't get the casting right and we cast the wrong person for a role. It's not because they did anything wrong," he added, according to Variety.

The filmmaker further explained that casting decisions often come down to how an actor fits into the larger dynamic of a film.

"Ryan is a fantastic actor, as we know," Jackson said. "Films are a chemistry both on camera and behind the camera. They're chemistry in terms of what the actor conveys to the audience of the film."

"It's just a complicated sort of amalgam of communication of how somebody gels into a group of people, into a story, into a character," he continued. "Occasionally we make our own mistakes."

In a 2010 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gosling had revealed that he and Jackson had different visions for the character.

"We had a different idea of how the character should look. I really believed he should be 210 pounds," Gosling had said.

"We didn't talk very much during the preproduction process, which was the problem," he added.

The actor also joked about the aftermath of the decision, saying, "I just showed up on set, and I had gotten it wrong. Then I was fat and unemployed."

Ronan also recalled the casting change during a 2024 appearance on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, revealing that the cast had already started preparing for the film before Gosling's departure.

"I think I just loved Ryan and his dog, George, and I was just sad that he wasn't gonna be around," Ronan said.

However, she noted that the separation between the actor and filmmakers was understandable.

"I think the reasons why they parted were totally valid," she said. "Sometimes you're just not on the same page."

Ronan also praised Wahlberg for stepping into the role, noting that his experience as a father may have helped shape the performance.

"Mark was able to step in, and he was a father," she said. "Ryan was like 27. He was young," according to Variety.

As someone who loves cinema, this is a masterclass in professionalism. Jackson didn't throw Gosling under the bus, and Gosling took it in good humor too. "I was fat and unemployed" - only a true artist can joke about that! The Lovely Bones remains a beautiful film, but now I wonder what Ryan's version would've been like. 🎭

Interesting how Hollywood handles these things differently. In our Indian film industry, actors often get replaced without any public explanation. Jackson's honesty is refreshing - admitting they cast the wrong person shows maturity. But let's be real, Gosling at 210 pounds would have been a very different movie. Sometimes creative differences are just part of the art.

The part about communication gap is very real. In any field - whether it's filmmaking or software development - if the director and actor don't talk during pre-production, problems are bound to happen. Gosling was only 27 and young, but he showed great dedication by gaining weight. Jackson's point about chemistry is valid though - sometimes even talented people don't click. 👏

I've been a fan of Peter Jackson since LOTR, and this just proves what a class act he is. Taking responsibility instead of blaming the actor is rare in any industry. Ryan Gosling's joke about being "fat and unemployed" shows he has a great sense of humor about it too. Saoirse Ronan's comment about missing George the dog was adorable 🐕

Respect to Jackson for handling this with grace. But I
