At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President of Vietnam, To Lam, will pay a state visit to India from May 5-7, a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Lam will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising several Ministers and senior officials of the Government of Vietnam. A strong business delegation will also accompany the visiting dignitary. This will be Lam's first State Visit to India, after being elected as the President of Vietnam in April, this year.

As per the statement, Lam will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan on May 6. Lam's visit coincides with the special occasion of the two countries marking the 10th anniversary of the elevation of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, agreed during the visit of Prime Minister Modi to Vietnam in 2016. PM Modi underlined the time-tested friendship between India and Vietnam and expressed the commitment to further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Bodh Gaya visit is a nice touch 🙏 Shows our cultural and Buddhist connections. Vietnam and India have so much potential in technology and manufacturing. Hope the business delegation leads to more investment and jobs in both countries.

A well-timed visit. India must counter China's influence in Southeast Asia, and Vietnam is a natural ally. However, the government should ensure that this partnership translates into real benefits for Indian businesses and not just photo-ops. Actions speak louder than MoUs.

As someone who works in trade, I see huge potential here. Vietnam's manufacturing boom and India's IT and pharma strengths complement each other. This visit could unlock new supply chain opportunities away from China. Fingers crossed for some concrete announcements! 🤞

Happy that our government is actively engaging with ASEAN countries. Vietnam is a reliable partner. But I hope the visit doesn't become just another diplomatic event — we need follow-through on defense cooperation and maritime security in the South China Sea. Let's see.
