Varun Dhawan to lead YRF's first-ever horror film, directed by Abhay Pannu: Sources
Mumbai, August 7
Actor Varun Dhawan is set to headline Yash Raj Films' first-ever horror feature, marking the banner's entry into the genre with a theatrical release planned for 2027, according to sources close to YRF.
The film will be directed by Abhay Pannu, best known for 'Rocket Boys'. Pannu has also written the screenplay. The project is scheduled to go on floors later this year.
An industry source confirmed Varun Dhawan's casting, saying, "Varun has come on board as the lead for YRF's first horror film."
The source added, "Yash Raj Films is entering the horror genre for the first time with a feature film directed by Abhay Pannu, strategically championed by Akshaye Widhani (Chief Executive Officer of Yash Raj Films), and now headlined by Varun Dhawan as the lead. YRF has made films across almost every genre except horror. Come 2027, and the banner will finally step into this genre."
The film marks Pannu's theatrical directorial debut after earning acclaim for 'Rocket Boys'. It also reinforces Yash Raj Films' stated commitment to supporting a new generation of filmmakers.
The upcoming project will also mark Varun Dhawan's second collaboration with Yash Raj Films after the success of 'Sui Dhaaga', as he returns to headline the studio's first theatrical horror film.

I'm a little skeptical about Varun Dhawan in a horror film. His strength is his energetic, boy-next-door charm. Horror needs subtlety and depth. Having said that, I appreciate YRF taking a risk and backing a new director. Abhay Pannu has a great track record, and if anyone can bring a fresh perspective to Indian horror, it's him. Let's hope this isn't just another jump-scare fest but something genuinely scary and well-written.
YRF horror film = dream come true for Bollywood fans! 😍 The production quality of YRF is unmatched, so I'm sure this will be a visual treat. Varun has been experimenting with his roles lately, and I think he'll do justice to this. Also, giving a new director like Abhay Pannu a big platform is exactly what our industry needs. Proud moment for Indian cinema!
This is a bold move by YRF. In an era where every production house is playing it safe with sequels and remakes, stepping into a new genre takes guts. Varun Dhawan has proven his versatility time and again - from Badlapur's intense drama to Sui Dhaaga's relatability. I'm genuinely excited to see him tackle horror. Just hoping the film doesn't rely too much on VFX and focuses on solid storytelling. Indian horror needs a revival, and this could be it.
As someone who watches a lot of international horror, I really hope YRF brings something unique to the table. Indian horror often gets bogged down by excessive background music and predictable scares. Abhay Pannu seems like a smart choice - Rocket Boys showed he can handle complex narratives and period detail. Varun Dhawan is a good box-office draw, but the success of this film will hinge on the script and execution. Wishing the team all the best!
