Uttarakhand: Shri Hemkunt Sahib Yatra 2026 commences with holy Guru Granth Sahib procession led by Panj Pyaras
Dehradun, May 23
The sacred Shri Hemkunt Sahib Yatra 2026 commenced on Saturday with deep spiritual fervour and immense devotion. The ceremonial procession carrying the holy Guru Granth Sahib to the revered shrine was conducted with great dignity and reverence.
The auspicious journey began from the base camp under the leadership of the Panj Pyaras. The Head Granthi carried the sacred Guru Granth Sahib on his head with complete religious sanctity and traditional maryada.
Devotees accompanied the procession while singing soulful kirtans.
The Indian Army band played devotional and martial tunes, adding to the spiritual atmosphere. Indian Army personnel, who had undertaken the challenging task of clearing snow from the pilgrimage route, also actively participated in managing the procession and ensuring the safety of pilgrims.
Gurdwara Chairman Bindra made a special appeal to the Sangat to refrain from photography and videography within the Gurdwara premises and instead immerse themselves fully in prayer and devotion, which is the true purpose of undertaking such a difficult and strenuous pilgrimage.
He also urged devotees to have langar and stay at the newly established Gurdwara Ratura, which would help reduce the burden on other Gurdwaras along the route.
Sardar Seva Singh welcomed devotees arriving from different states across India as well as from abroad, and highlighted the universal spiritual appeal of this sacred shrine associated with Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib Ji is one of the most revered Sikh shrines, drawing thousands of pilgrims every year. It is recorded in the holy Granth Sahib that the tenth guru of Sikhs, Guru Govind Singh, meditated by the serene banks of Hemkund lake in one of his earlier births.
Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the gurudwara's picturesque natural settings and trek routes, including the one to the Valley of Flowers, make it a popular destination for trekkers and tourists.

Beautiful to see the yatra begin with such dignity. The appeal by Gurdwara Chairman Bindra to avoid photography and focus on prayer is so important - we often get distracted by our phones when the real purpose is spiritual connection. Hemkund Sahib is truly a gem of Uttarakhand. 🏔️
As someone from the US who has visited Hemkund Sahib, I can say this is one of the most spiritually uplifting places on earth. The combination of Sikh devotion, the Indian Army's support, and the stunning Himalayan scenery is unmatched. I hope the new gurdwara at Ratura helps manage the crowds better.
Respectful observation: I appreciate the spiritual significance, but the article mentions pilgrims from abroad while many Indians struggle to afford such yatras. More attention on making this accessible for local devotees from humble backgrounds would be welcome. Still, a beautiful tradition overall.
The combination of Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers makes this trek truly divine. Our government should promote these spiritual-tourism routes more actively. And the Indian Army's band playing devotional tunes? Chills! 🇮🇳🙏
I visited Hemkund Sahib three years ago, and the energy there is indescribable. The Panj Pyaras leading the procession with the Guru Granth Sahib on their heads - that's the kind of faith that moves mountains. And yes, the Army's role is crucial; the terrain is no joke. Bravo to everyone involved.
