"Use petrol, diesel judiciously": BJP MP Ramesh Jigajinagi backs PM Modi's fuel-saving appeal, rides electric bike to DM's office
Vijayapura, May 18
BJP MP Ramesh Jigajinagi on Monday rode an electric bike to the Deputy Commissioner's office in Vijayapura, saying the move was aimed at setting a positive example after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to conserve fuel amid the West Asia crisis.
Speaking to reporters, Jigajinagi urged people to use petrol and diesel judiciously, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's instructions amid fear of war.
"Following PM Modi's appeal due to the threat of war, petrol and diesel should be used sparingly. I travelled to the District Magistrate's office on an electric motorcycle instead of a car to bring various problems in the district to the DC's attention. I did this because I wanted to set a positive example for the people of the district," Jigajinagi said.
Taking a swipe at the Congress, the BJP MP said the party would not return to power at the Centre.
"The Congress party will never return to power in the country again. Seeing Modi's work, Rahul Gandhi is shaken," he said.
Earlier, the Centre increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 per litre each across the country. Following the revision, petrol prices in New Delhi also rose from Rs 94.77 to Rs 97.77 per litre, while diesel prices increased from Rs 87.67 to Rs 90.67 per litre.
The hike comes amid growing concerns over the global energy crisis triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The geopolitical tensions, particularly the US-Israel and Iran conflict that began on February 28 this year, have disrupted global crude oil supplies and pushed Brent crude prices above USD 100 per barrel.
The situation further intensified after disruptions and blockades near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most crucial maritime oil trade routes. Several West Asian nations involved in the conflict are among the leading fuel suppliers globally.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to prioritise work from home, cut fuel consumption, avoid foreign travel for a year, adopt Swadeshi products, reduce cooking oil use, shift to natural farming and curb gold purchases, while addressing a gathering.

Finally some leadership by example! PM Modi's appeal to conserve fuel during this West Asia crisis is practical. If every MP starts using electric vehicles, it will inspire millions. But I wish they'd also push for better public transport infrastructure instead of just asking us to cut usage. 🇮🇳
As someone living in the US, I find this fascinating. Our politicians here wouldn't be caught dead on a motorcycle! But on a serious note, the Strait of Hormuz disruption is no joke—it affects global oil supply. India is smart to promote conservation early. Smart move, PM Modi. 👍
Electric bike to DC office? That's all well and good, but what about the common man who can't afford an EV? Prices are skyrocketing and salary isn't increasing. Also, the swipe at Congress was unnecessary—focus on solutions, not politics. 🙏
I appreciate the intent behind this. PM Modi's call to reduce foreign travel and use Swadeshi products makes sense during this global crisis. But the government should also invest more in solar energy and EVs made in India. We can't just depend on appeals—we need affordable alternatives. 🌱
This is interesting from a global perspective. In Canada, we're also dealing with high fuel prices due to the West Asia conflict. India's approach of conservation through leadership by example is different from our carbon tax. Both have merits. Hope the crisis ends soon. 🕊️
