U'khand CM Dhami meets family of Army soldier Amit Kumar Anathwal; assures unwavering support to bravehearts' kin

On the eve of India's 80th Independence Day, as part of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's initiative to honour the families of soldiers who laid down their lives in service of the nation and interact with them personally, he visited the residence of late Army soldier Amit Kumar Anathwal Dehradun
The Chief Minister met with the family members of the deceased soldier at the latter's residence in Bhaowala and enquired about the well-being of Amit Kumar Anathwal's father, Nagendra Prasad Anathwal, and other family members. The Chief Minister paid his heartfelt tribute to the brave soldier and honoured his family.
Dhami said that Independence Day is not merely an occasion for celebration but also a sacred day to remember the supreme sacrifices of the brave sons of the nation who gave everything for the defence of the country. He said the state government holds the families of army soldiers in the highest regard and will always stand by them. He added that honouring soldier families is a matter of honour for the entire society and nation.
A native of village Kwala in Kaljikhal block of Pauri Garhwal district, Amit Kumar Anathwal made the supreme sacrifice while defending the nation. He joined the Garhwal Rifles on December 9, 2011, and later served with the 4 Para Special Forces. He was posted in the Kupwara area of Jammu and Kashmir.
In April 2020, during an encounter with terrorists in the Keran Sector, Amit Kumar Anathwal displayed exceptional courage and, along with his fellow soldiers, eliminated five terrorists. During the operation, five brave soldiers, including Amit Kumar Anathwal, made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the motherland.
In recognition of his exceptional bravery and valour, the nation posthumously conferred the Sena Medal on Amit Kumar Anathwal.
Dhami said that Uttarakhand, known as the land of valour, has given many brave soldiers to the nation, and the name of Amit Kumar Anathwal will always be remembered with pride and honour among these immortal heroes. He said the state government will continue its efforts to ensure that his sacrifice and valour are remembered by future generations and will remain committed to the honour and welfare of the families of soldiers.

Such gestures may seem small, but they mean the world to the families who have lost their loved ones. Amit Kumar Anathwal was just 27 when he made the supreme sacrifice. The Sena Medal is a testament to his bravery. I hope the government also ensures proper pension and education support for his family members, not just on Independence Day but throughout the year.
As someone who has lived in the US for 20 years, I still follow news from India closely. This is one of those moments that makes me proud to be Indian. The Keran Sector encounter in 2020 was a major operation against terrorists. Amit ji and his team eliminated five terrorists before making the ultimate sacrifice. This is the kind of valour our soldiers display daily. While we enjoy our freedom, they guard our borders in the toughest conditions. I hope the younger generation learns from such heroes. Jai Hind!
Respect to the braveheart and his family. However, I hope such visits aren't just photo opportunities for politicians. The real test is in the follow-up - whether the family gets timely compensation, jobs for dependents, and proper healthcare. Actions speak louder than words.
