UIDAI Reaches 103,000 Schools in Massive Child Aadhaar Biometric Update Drive

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has conducted a massive, mission-mode drive to update biometrics in children's Aadhaar cards directly within school campuses. The initiative has already reached over 103,000 schools and facilitated updates for approximately 12 million students. The drive, which is free for children aged 7-15, was enabled by a technological integration with the UDISE+ system to identify and track eligible students. This update is crucial for children to authenticate and receive benefits under various government schemes and for exam registrations.

UIDAI reaches 103,000 schools in nationwide biometric update drive: IT Ministry

UIDAI's mission-mode drive has helped 12 million school children update Aadhaar biometrics in schools, integrating with UDISE+ for seamless tracking.

"Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) drive is ongoing for six months in mission mode across the country - Ministry of Electronics & IT"

New Delhi, March 3

The Unique Identification Authority of India has saturated more than 103,000 schools across India and helped millions of school students complete their mandatory biometric update in Aadhaar at ease and comfort of their school campuses.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Electronics & IT, "Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) drive is ongoing for six months in mission mode across the country; MBU in Aadhaar for children in the 7-15 age group is free for a year since 1 Oct 2025."

"UIDAI Regional Offices and education departments of states are working in collaboration with schools," the statement added.

So far, the massive exercise has helped around 1.2 crore (12 million) school children complete their MBU right in their schools.

Keeping biometric updated in children's Aadhaar helps them while carrying out authentication for receiving benefits under various Government schemes, scholarships, wherever applicable, and registering in competitive and university examinations like NEET, JEE, CUET etc. UIDAI has been encouraging parents and guardians to update their children's biometric in Aadhaar.

UIDAI rolled out the mission mode MBU drive for school children in September 2025, after a successful technological integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) application.

The integration with UDISE+ of the union Department of School Education & Literacy enabled visibility of MBUs status of children at schools. It helped to identify children who were due for an MBU and hold camps at schools to complete the MBU.

UIDAI Regional Offices and State Offices in the country have been working to coordinate the pro-children exercise with all the stakeholders including the Education Departments of States & Union Territories, district administration, schools and UIDAI's ecosystem partners.

At least 4000 machines are in use to execute the ongoing exercise, and UIDAI is in the processing of augmenting this number further to accelerate the pace.

Good work by UIDAI. Integrating with UDISE+ is smart. Now they know exactly which child needs an update. Hope the data privacy is maintained strictly. We hear so many stories of data leaks.

1.2 crore children! That's a massive number. This will definitely help when applying for scholarships and even for board exam registrations later. One less document to worry about.

As someone who works in ed-tech, this is a great example of govtech. Streamlining processes for students is crucial. But I hope they have reached remote schools in tribal areas as well. The digital divide is real.

While the convenience is appreciated, making it "mandatory" for children to link everything to Aadhaar is concerning. What about choice? Not every scheme needs biometric authentication for a child.

The scale is impressive. 103,000 schools! Hope the machines and process are child-friendly. Some kids are scared of fingerprint scanners. Teachers must be handling it well. 👏
