TVK MLA Prabhakar files nomination for Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker in presence of CM Vijay

TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar files nomination for Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker in presence of CM Vijay. Vijay takes oath, promises transparent government.

"I want my government to be a transparent government. That is the very first thing I want to do. - CM C Joseph Vijay"

Chennai, May 11

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam MLA JCD Prabhakar on Monday filed his nomination for the post of Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in the presence of Chief Minister Vijay.

The nomination filing marks a key procedural development in the formation of the new Tamil Nadu Assembly leadership structure under the TVK-led government.

Prabhakar, who was elected from the Thousand Lights constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections, defeated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate Ezhlian Naganathan.

Although TVK fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats, the party secured support from several other parties, including the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Left parties, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), enabling Vijay to form the government in the state.

Meanwhile, in the oath-taking ceremony of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led Tamil Nadu government, all MLAs of the State Legislative Assembly took oath as members of the House on Monday.

Among those sworn in were prominent leaders such as Edappadi K Palaniswami, O Panneerselvam, and Udhayanidhi Stalin, along with Tamil Nadu ministers including N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, KG Arunraj and KA Sengottaiyan.

Before the swearing-in of the MLAs, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay took oath as a member of the House. The oath was administered by pro tem Speaker MV Karuppaiah.

In his first speech after being sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM, Vijay expressed his will to run a "transparent government", noting that he would perform all actions "openly." He also accused the previous DMK government of emptying the state's treasury.

"After reviewing everything, I intend to release a white paper to the people. I want my government to be a transparent government. That is the very first thing I want to do. As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, if I need to meet someone, I will not do it secretly or behind closed doors. Whatever I do, I will do openly and transparently. I request all of you to give me some time. I will gradually fulfil everything I have promised and will sincerely strive to implement them. This is your government. I will ensure strict safety for women," CM Vijay said.

Soon after taking the oath, Vijay signed the first set of official documents related to key poll promises and governance measures. The approvals included providing 200 units of free electricity and constituting Special Task Forces to tackle drug-related crimes and strengthen women's safety in the state.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam registered a major victory in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, emerging as the single-largest party with 108 seats in the Assembly.

As Vijay embarks on this new journey, the eyes of the nation remain on Tamil Nadu to see how the actor-turned-politician navigates the complexities of coalition management while delivering on his ambitious "New Tamil Nadu" vision.

As a Chennai resident, I'm cautiously optimistic. The 200 units free electricity promise sounds good on paper, but will it strain state finances? DMK left treasury empty, but TVK needs to show clear roadmap. Also, women's safety STF is long overdue - hope it's not just another photo-op initiative. Prabhakar as Speaker - interesting choice, hope he maintains neutrality despite being from ruling party.

Impressive first day moves by Vijay - signing free electricity and STF orders immediately. Shows he means business. But releasing a white paper on DMK's treasury mismanagement? That's bold move. Either he has solid evidence or it's political drama. Let's see. Also interesting that OPS and EPS both took oath - old warhorses in new political landscape.

Vijay's speech gave me goosebumps! "I will do everything openly" - exactly what Tamil Nadu needs. But being from a political family myself (my father was in local politics), I know promises made in assembly are different from reality. White paper on empty treasury is good, but CM needs to focus on education and job creation too. Hope actor Vijay becomes administrator Vijay. 😊

Coimbatore here! Watching Vijay's transition from silver screen to assembly is fascinating. But let's not get carried away - DMK ruled for decades and had deep roots. TVK's coalition includes VCK and Left parties who have their own agendas. Prabhakar as Speaker? Hope he doesn't become a rubber stamp. Also, 200 units free electricity - hope it's sustainable for industrial state like TN.
