Tripura crosses 15 MW rooftop solar milestone under PM Surya Ghar Scheme; over Rs 32.5 crore subsidies disbursed

Tripura has crossed a significant milestone in renewable energy generation, with the cumulative installed capacity of rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana surpassing 15 MW, marking significant progress towards decentralised and sustainable power generation across the state.
According to official data available as of July 27, 2026, a total of 17,330 applications have been registered under the scheme in Tripura. Of these, 7,846 applications have been submitted, representing a proposed solar capacity of 24,733 kWp. Rooftop solar installations have already been completed in 4,460 households, achieving a cumulative installed capacity of 15,300 kWp (15.3 MW).
The scheme enables households to generate electricity through rooftop solar panels for their own consumption while supplying surplus power to the grid through net metering. This transition is gradually transforming consumers into power producers, reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources and promoting clean energy.
The initiative has also provided substantial financial benefits. So far, 3,853 consumers have received subsidies exceeding ₹32.52 crore, helping reduce the cost of installing rooftop solar systems and lowering household electricity expenses.
The programme is being implemented under the leadership of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) Managing Director Biswajit Basu, with guidance from Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Power Secretary Abhishek Singh, IAS. The state government is actively working to expand rooftop solar adoption and bring more households under the renewable energy initiative.
The impact of the scheme is already becoming visible. During the April-June 2026 quarter, 1,679 consumers reduced their electricity bills to zero and became eligible to earn a combined ₹5.79 lakh by supplying surplus electricity to the grid. The amount is expected to be credited to their respective accounts shortly.
Officials said the scheme is encouraging households to utilise vacant rooftops for clean energy generation, offering lower electricity bills, government subsidies and an opportunity to earn additional income through surplus power generation.
With over 4,460 rooftop solar installations already operational and thousands of applications in the pipeline, Tripura is steadily moving towards a cleaner, more self-reliant and decentralised energy future, with rooftop solar expected to play an increasingly important role in the state's power sector.
