Tribal communities exemplify harmony with nature, human values: President Murmu

Betul, June 18

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday lauded the tribal communities of India for preserving their rich cultural heritage, traditional values and close bond with nature, describing them as a source of inspiration for society at large.

Addressing a large gathering at the 'Empowerment of Tribal Society through Spiritual Awakening' conference at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Betul, President Murmu said tribal communities have safeguarded their customs and traditions across generations while remaining deeply connected to the environment.

"The tribal community has preserved its traditions and cultural heritage through generations. Their lives are rooted in empathy, cooperation, honesty and human values, which inspire society at large," President Murmu said.

The conference, attended by thousands of tribal men and women from different parts of Madhya Pradesh, focussed on the role of spirituality in social empowerment and community development.

President Murmu formally inaugurated the event by lighting a ceremonial lamp after the National Song and National Anthem were rendered. The programme also featured cultural performances showcasing tribal traditions and artistic heritage.

Highlighting the importance of spiritual values, the President said inner awakening strengthens individuals and communities alike.

"Spirituality brings peace, balance and renewed hope in a person's life. Such transformation helps create positive change in society and contributes to the empowerment of communities," she said.

President Murmu particularly emphasised the tribal way of life and its relevance in addressing contemporary environmental challenges. She noted that tribal communities have long practised sustainable living and have maintained a harmonious relationship with nature.

"The tribal community's bond with nature and its approach towards conserving water, forests and land serve as an exemplary model for society today," the President said.

Calling for greater public participation in environmental protection, she urged citizens to take up large-scale tree plantation and make conservation efforts a people's movement.

The President's remarks came at a time when issues related to environmental sustainability and the protection of indigenous traditions are receiving increasing attention nationwide.

She said the values embedded in tribal life offer important lessons for building a balanced and inclusive society.

Madhya Pradesh Governor, Mangubhai Patel, presided over the conference. Union Minister of State Durgadas Uike, State Minister Narendra Shivaji Patel and Brahma Kumaris' Odisha incharge Dr Nathmal were among those present on the dais.

The Betul event was one of the key engagements of President Murmu's five-day visit to Madhya Pradesh.

Very inspiring words from our President. But I hope such conferences translate into real action for tribal communities—better education, healthcare and land rights. Spirituality is important but so is practical empowerment. Betul has many tribal villages that still lack basic amenities. Words alone won't fill stomachs.

As someone who grew up in the West, I admire how India celebrates its indigenous cultures at the highest level. President Murmu herself being from a tribal community makes this so genuine. The emphasis on sustainable living and conservation is exactly what the world needs right now. Truly inspiring. 🌿

Finally someone in power acknowledges what we've known forever. Tribal communities have been practising 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (world is one family) long before it became a slogan. Their respect for forests and water is a lesson for all of us who mindlessly consume. Great speech by President Murmu. Jai Hind. 🇮🇳

Beautiful to see our President highlighting tribal wisdom. My own grandmother is from a tribal background in Odisha, and she taught me to never waste water or cut a tree needlessly. These values are in their DNA. But we need more than conferences—we need actual policies to protect their lands from mining and deforestation. Spiritual awakening is good; legal protection is better.

President Murmu is spot on. Tribal communities are the original environmentalists. While urban India is obsessed with air purifiers and bottled water, these communities have lived sustainably for centuries. The government should integrate their traditional knowledge into our school curriculum. Trees, rivers, forests—they treat them as
