New Delhi, April 22

Tesla on Wednesday unveiled the new six-seater Model Y L in India, expanding its local portfolio with a family-focused electric SUV designed for space, comfort and performance. The launch took place at the Ballard Pier Downtown Experience Centre, with online bookings opening immediately on the company's official website.

The Model Y L will be available for public viewing starting April 23, 2026, at Tesla's experience centres in key locations, including Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai, Aerocity in Delhi and Gurugram. The company said deliveries are expected to begin from June 2026 across India.

Positioned as a premium family vehicle, the Model Y L offers a claimed driving range of up to 681 km (WLTP) and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds. It features a three-row, six-seat configuration with a focus on maximizing cabin space, comfort and versatility. The second-row captain seats come equipped with powered armrests, ventilation, heating and one-touch folding, while the third row offers power recline, climate control vents and easy-fold functionality.

The vehicle also emphasises ride comfort and refinement. It includes acoustic glass, an upgraded suspension system and adaptive damping technology to improve handling and reduce road vibrations.

A premium in-car experience is supported by an 18-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, along with connected features such as live traffic visualization, satellite-view maps, real-time camera access and streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and Netflix.

Tesla has priced the Model Y L starting at Rs 61.99 lakh, with financing options beginning at Rs 49,000 per month. The launch marks another step in Tesla's expansion in India, where the company is also strengthening its charging and service infrastructure.

Currently, Tesla operates five Supercharger stations in India, with a total of 20 Superchargers and 14 Wall Connectors. The company plans to add seven more Supercharger stations along major highways connecting cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.

On the service front, Tesla continues to rely on its direct-to-customer model, offering over-the-air software updates and remote diagnostics to minimise maintenance requirements.

Finally a six-seater EV option! We were looking for a family SUV that's eco-friendly but most options were cramped. The captain seats with ventilation and heating sound perfect for Indian summers and those rare hill station trips. But only 5 supercharger stations in all of India? That's barely anything. Need at least 50 more before I'd feel comfortable buying one.

Great to see Tesla expanding in India! The Model Y L with that 5-second 0-100 is seriously quick for a family car. But honestly, the charging infrastructure is the real bottleneck. 20 superchargers for a country our size is like a drop in the ocean. They need to partner with local companies like Tata Power or ChargePoint to scale up fast. Otherwise this remains a toy for the ultra-rich in metro cities.

Rs 49,000 per month EMI? That's more than many people's monthly salary! But for those who can afford, this is a solid option. The 18-speaker audio system and Netflix integration will make long drives fun. My main concern is service—Tesla's direct model might not work well in Tier 2 cities. What if something breaks in Nagpur? Hope they expand service centres quickly.

Great product, but the pricing is too steep for India's market. In the US, the Model Y is around $50k, which is about 42 lakh rupees. Here it's 62 lakh—almost 50% more! Import duties and taxes are killing affordability. Still, the 681 km range is class-leading. If Tesla can localize manufacturing in India someday, prices could drop significantly.
